2 TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT I.Virtual Education does… …provide advantageous opportunities to meet the needs of ESE students II.Virtual Education does not… …provide adequate accommodations to meet the needs of ESE students

3  School districts in Florida are required by the Department of Education to have Exceptional Student Education Policies and Procedures (SP&P).  Most school districts do not mention virtual education in the district SP&P. CURRENT STATE OF AFFAIRS

4 A.Virtual education programs will provide ESE services and certified staff for their enrolled students. B.Students enrolled in virtual education programs will be provided with ESE referrals, evaluations, progress monitoring, annual reviews, interventions, and accommodations for ESE services under the same policies and procedures outlined for all students. C.Accommodations for ESE students enrolled in virtual education programs will be specified in IEPs to meet their unique educational needs. D.IEP teams will be assigned accordingly to students enrolled in virtual education programs. E.Procedural safeguards will apply to ESE students enrolled in virtual education programs for their protection. 5 ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ESE STUDENTS WITH IEPS TO BE UTILIZED BY ONLINE INSTRUCTORS Specific Learning Disability (SLD) Physical Impairment (PI) Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) English Language Learner (ELL)

6 ACCOMMODATION #1  ESE students diagnosed with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) will be given extended time to complete assignments and assessments online.

7 ACCOMMODATION #2  ESE students identified with a Physical Impairment (PI) will be provided assistive technologies to complete assignments and assessments online, to include specialized materials, equipment, devices, tools, hardware, and software.

8 ACCOMMODATION #3  ESE students identified with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) will be prompted to review their assignments for omissions and corrections before submitting it as final online.

9 ACCOMMODATION #4  ESE students identified with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be given shorter segments and less quantity of assignments and assessments online.

10 ACCOMMODATION #5  ESE students identified as an English Language Learner (ELL) will be given instructional materials in their native language online.
