The shape of Surrey’s education system The Council’s response to Educational Excellence has been guided by the following principles: Support choice Protect small and rural schools Ensure effective and local accountability Champion an inclusive education system Work with the DfE in the best interests of Surrey’s communities, their schools and children

6. The Council’s future role and responsibilities Strategic role - represent communities, engage schools and work with the regional schools commissioner (RSC) around: -Safeguarding -SEND -educational achievement of vulnerable children -championing the needs of families and communities Specific responsibilities -Safeguarding – inc. ensuring schools discharge their responsibilities -SEND and LAC provision -Ensure provision of sufficient of school places – early years, childcare, schools and FE - Admissions - Home-to-school transport

7. Ensuring high performance and inclusivity Key areas of work: Developing self sustaining models of school improvement Ensuring rapidly improved outcomes for all vulnerable groups Transforming the SEND system Ensuring provision of sufficient school places and overseeing admissions

8. Safeguarding all children Key areas of work: Ensuring consistently good social work practice Extending the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH) “front door” for safeguarding concerns Developing a coherent and co-ordinated Early Help system

9. Strengths to build upon  High attainment levels across all key stages  Every School a Good School – 92% of schools good or outstanding  High levels of participation among young people  Proven track record on restorative justice  A strong apprenticeship offer  The Arts Council have recently recognised the potential to establish a Cultural Education Partnership in Surrey
