Southern Slavery Shuo Yan

Separation of Families by Sale 1.Separation of slaves’ families are affect by their masters’ death This the idea I get from the story of Harriet Tubman’s nuclear family. The fate of each her family member significantly changed in 1824, when their mistress died.

Separation of Families by Sale 2. Slaves who are twelve and twenty-five years old are sold by their masters for additional interests, such as cash or reduce their expenses (p134). This may because market price rose in both the Upper and Lower South. In 1860 prime field bands sold for $1000 in Virginia and $1,800 in New Orleans (p135). From what I learned about “The Slave Diet”, masters can stop providing food to the slaves they owned by selling. I think that it is a way to reduce expenses.

Resistance Sabotage Slave looked particularly for clues as to whether a buyer might be licentious, dishonest, cruel, or otherwise unsatisfactory (p152). “I never saw a human countenance that expressed more of the evil passions of the heart than did that of this man, and his conversation corresponded with his physiognomy” (p152). I can find that slaves are able to revenge their masters because of unfair or bad treatment.

Resistance Running Away The most common form of overt slave resistance was running away. When families were broken up through sale, slaves ran away to find children, parents, and spouses (p154). All of these causes are humans’ nature, that we love our families and lovers.

Resistance Slave Revolts – In 1810 a plot was uncovered in Lexington, Kentucky. The following year, more than four hundred rebellious slaves in Louisiana had to be put down by federal and state troops (p155). – According to “Major American Slave Rebellions”, the biggest rebellions in 1835-1838 has 935-1265 black members and they killed 400 white. – I think that revolt in group is very important form to fight with slaves’ masters because slaves knew that they can be more strong when they fight together.
