Bonk Four stages: Reading, reflecting, displaying and doing. Different learning styles, different types of students

Prensky Technology is the air that the new generation breathes. Constant change: information Volatility, uncertainty (everything changes so fast), complexity, ambiguity) We need to change the way we do thingns. So much of what we do is top down: we need more balance (listen to the new generation) The digital natives have better/ different capabilities/ abilities because of technology.

Siemens The information/content is fragmented There is a lot of information and there must exist control to know what to choose and why. The teacher’s role is to guide students instead of providing them with all the information.

Common aspects

Scholars must give technology its place since it is part of the daily live of every individual. In addition, people in charge of education should start thinking of technology as a foundation of everyone’s life and not as a tool. As an innate aspect of everyone, different decisions regarding its implementation in educations must be made.

Technology must be used in order to guarantee collaborative learning. Unlike individual learning, people engaged in collaborative learning capitalize on one another’s resources and skills (asking one another for information, evaluating one another’s ideas, monitoring one another’s work. Moreover, collaborative learning promotes the opportunity to share and obtain ideas among others all around the world or very distant. Therefore, technology must facilitate this. Based on the videos, these are other aspects technology must develop or encourage to work with: Foster reflection, elaboration, discussion, collaboration, teaming

Accelerating change (Prensky) Knowledge changes constantly since there is a constant change. Teaching strategies must change as well taking into consideration the needs of this new generation of students with different interests and capabilities. Students do not want something relevant, but real.

Reflection (Bonk & Siemens) Teachers should make students think and reflect on what they listen, see and read. Critical students: analyze all the information they encounter (Bonk & Siemens) and question it.

Students have an active role Students are used to receive information instead of create their own (Siemens) Now, teachers participate with students’ knowledge and they do not dictate it. (Siemens) Think critically and reflect.

Mutual respect (Prensky) Digital immigrants must respect digital natives, try to understand them and do not judge them only because they have different interests and the way they do things is different. We must teach by helping students follow their passions, the things they like, partnering by making them interact and work with others, focusing on thinking, acting, relating and accomplishing (Siemens & Prensky)

Conclusion If we understand and accept the digital natives’ interests and needs, education might change their systems and teachers can change what they teach and how they teach it. In other words, change their teaching strategies. In addition, by doing this and by making technology an essential part of education, we might enhance our students capabilities
