Young, J6 Artist Statement As I did this project, I learned a lot about my identity and the mask I “wear.” When I become really good friends with other people, a bit of their personality rubs off on me and is added to my mask. So, my self portrait is a drawing of me, of my true personality, not the other characteristics added by some of the people I hang out with.

Young, J7 Artist Standards  Measurements: 12x18 inches  Media: value drawing  Standard 1: Understanding and Applying Media Technique and Processes  Standard 3: Creating Artwork Through Choice of Subjects, Symbols, and Ideas  Standard 5: Reflecting Upon and Assessing the Characteristics and Merits of Art

Young, J8 Artist Statement Whenever a person creates art, there is meaning to every part of it. A picture is worth a thousand words. Each of my creatures has a special meaning to me, that nobody may understand. The scenery reminds me of my close relatives, and experiences of my past, whether they were good, or bad. My creatures are all of different drawing strategies, and with each media used, it gave off a different impression, unique to the creature. A wise person told me that there is ALWAYS more to the story than you may see or think.

Young, J11 Artist Statement NO If you think that school is nice to every kid, you’re wrong. If you don’t think that bullies are a real problem, you are still wrong. Kids today have been raised to think that racism and cussing at people because of their looks are okay, when it’s really a serious problem. Whether you know it or not, bullying causes kids not to want to attend school because of these kids. There have been incidents where kids have attempted suicide, and unfortunately it has sometimes been successful. You really have absolutely NO idea of what you cause by calling somebody a freak or a loser, until it’s too late, unless you act now.

Young, J12 Artwork Standard  Measurements: 11x14  Media: Photography, Paper, ink, colored pencils  Standard 2: Using Knowledge of the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design Elements of Art: Color, form, line, shape, space, texture, value Principles of Design: Balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, unity  Standard 3: Creating Artworks through Choice of Subjects, Symbols, and Ideas  Standard 6: Making Connections Between the Visual Arts and Other Disciplines

Artist Statement Tom Krause once said, “If you only do what you know you can do-you never do very much.” Mrs. Ward, my Art 2D art teacher, seemed to open up this concept to me at the beginning of the year. The 2D Art class has used so many different medias and in so many different ways, and if I wouldn’t have taken this class, I wouldn’t have known this. This concept seems to apply to everything we do. Sports, music, grades, everything. If we don’t think we can make the high school team but we never try, how will we know? If you stick to the standard classes instead of advanced, how will you know if you ever had the capability to handle the advanced course? If you only stick to the things that you are sure about, then how will you ever have a little adventure in your life? Life is about taking up the challenge. Napoleon Hill once said, “The strongest oak tree of the forest is not the one that is protected from the storm and hidden from the sun. It's the one that stands in the open where it is compelled to struggle for its existence against the winds and rains and the scorching sun.” If we hide and cower in the face of adventure and hardships, we will never know what we can and can’t do. If you don’t try, then you will never know, and you will never have lived up to your full potential.
