11 Fort Nashborough Was founded by James Robertson and John Donelson in the spring of 1779 in the French Lick area. Later named Nashville. May 13, The Cumberland Compact was signed- some believe this is the foundation to the Tennessee State Constitution. Robertson and Donelson had male settlers first settle along the Cumberland river and in time had the settlers wives and children brought by river and trail which also came with many attacks by natives. Many of these journeys where during an extremely brutal winter. Natives attacked Nashborough with the most famous being the Battle of the Bluffs. The Chickamauga Cherokee (Lower Cherokee) were led by Dragging Canoe, who lured almost all the men outside of the fort before attacking them. The settlers survived and attacks tapered off the following years.
