36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” 37They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost. 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds? 39 Look at my hands and my feet. It is I myself! Touch me and see; a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have.” 40 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and feet. 41 And while they still did not believe it because of joy and amazement, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 They gave him a piece of broiled fish, 43 and he took it and ate it in their presence.

44 He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” 45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.

What is the deal with Jesus? Why so little information? Why didn’t they recognize him? What is with walking through walls? He just disappears? He looks different!

Eternal – eternity is d isorienting Age-long, and therefore: practically eternal, unending; partaking of the character of that which lasts for an age, as contrasted with that which is brief and fleeting. Aiṓnios - Age like (an adjective, derived from aiṓn - having a particular character and quality) – The quality describing a particular age figuratively… the unique quality of God's life "Eternal life operates simultaneously outside of time, inside of time, and beyond time quality of the age it relates to Does not focus on the future per se, but rather on the quality of the age it relates to.

Eternal Life – eternity is disorienting Aiṓnios - Age like (an adjective, derived from aiṓn - having a particular character and q uality) quality of the age it relates to Does not focus on the future per se, but rather on the quality of the age it relates to. That, I think, is the hardest thing for us to grasp about the resurrection. … People often think that ‘resurrection’ simply means ‘life after death’ or ‘going to heaven’, but in the Jewish world of the first century it meant a new embodied life in God’s new world; a life after ‘life after death’, if you like. 10 What is the deal with Jesus? Post Good Friday – Paid what we owed and could not afford Post Easter Sunday – Defeated Death’s hold on humanity and all created things! Jesus is back in his new old body

What is the deal with the Fish? Eternal Life A ghost does not have flesh and bones, as you see I have. 40 Days to Reorient Acts 1:3After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. But if our minds are still reeling from trying to take all this in – and it seems, not surprisingly, as though that’s how the disciples were too – Then what Jesus had to say in his last days with them is very practical, and points the way to the whole mission of the church - N.T. Wright

The Kingdom of God/Heaven is like…. Mustard Seed Banquet Wedding House Worship City Luke 14:15-24 – A Dinner Master sends a servant to invite many to the banquet. When the banquet came – many refused with excuses The master tells the servant to gather more - blind, lame, sick He had already done so. So the servant was sent out even further to the margins. Sound familiar?

Jesus is Part of an Eon Outside Ours Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. - Mathew 24:35, Mark 13:31 & Luke 21:33 Jesus is part of something that is outside our generation, our age but we are bound to the earthly age: – We get glimpses of eternity, the kingdom of God – Jesus Changes Everything Last week Matt talked about Adam and eve bringing sin and death into our age – but Jesus brings the possibility of life and freedom to those of us bound to this age.

Jesus has a new body – He is the first born of all creation – Into Eternal Life Ultimately sin, death and destruction in all forms were/are/will be defeated. Jesus new body is at home in Eternal Life and is an example, down payment, foretaste of our body in Eternal Life

Emptied Himself kenós – properly, empty, void; hence, worthless ("null"),amounting to zero (of no value, profit) Definition: (a) I empty, (b) I deprive of content, make unreal. Properly, to empty out, render void; (passive) be emptied – hence, without recognition, perceived as valueless (Phil 2:7). See 2756 (kenos).See 2756

Jesus’ New – Jesus’ Original Very truly I tell you, before Abraham was born, I am! In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God

Colossians 1:15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Jesus died our death, but… We secretly groan to be somewhere else, maybe not so secretly, because we know a perfected body waits for us. So as long as we are in this earthly body, wonderful as it truly is, we yearn for our eternal one. Jesus has created one for us, modeling it before the disciples’ very eyes. He wanted us to never forget it so he gave us His very Spirit as a down payment on our future residence! Never forget we have on layaway!

Romans 3:21...God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. … 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. Romans 6:22But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

How to embrace Eternal Life? Become a community of the Scriptures Front to back point to Christ It all points to calling for Repentance and Proclaiming Forgiveness In all nations To all People

I refuse to embrace a worldview that pushes the promises of God into another time period. What God promises is for us today. God has created a new body for us, Jesus modeled it before the disciples’ very eyes. He wanted us to remember what is in store so he gave us His very Spirit as a down payment on our future residence! Never forget we have on layaway!
