1 Unit 1 Day 8 The Revolutionary War Quote: “The year 1776 is over, I am heartily glad of it and hope you nor America will ever be plagued with such another.” - Robert Morris in a letter to General Washington Essential Question(s): How did the relationship between colonists and the British government evolve over time? Under what circumstances should individuals stand up for what is just in the face of authority? 2 The Revolutionary War December 1776, Washington’s army is able to surprise and capture Hessian soldiers at Trenton, New Jersey. A few days later on January 3rd he wins another victory at Princeton.

3 In September 1777, after being outfought and outmaneuvered the British captured Philadelphia. US diplomats in France work at getting military and financial help needed to win the war.

4 At the Battles of Saratoga fought between September and October 1777 the Continental Army won a decisive victory forcing an entire British army to surrender.

5 The victory at Saratoga will lead the US and France to sign a formal treaty granting the US military and financial help in the war.

6 1777-1778, Washington’s army goes into winter quarters at Valley Forge. The winter was very harsh but the army will receive needed training from foreign volunteers including the Baron von Steuben.
