Dativ Präpositionen
2
There are 8 Dativ Prepositions
3
Certain German prepositions are governed by the dative case. That is, they take an object in the dative case. The prepositions in the previous slide are only Dativ.
4
Two Way (Duel) Prepositions
5
The basic rule for determining whether a two- way preposition should have an object in the accusative or dative case is motion (wohin?, where to?) versus location (wo?, where?, at rest). If there is motion towards something or a specific location, then usually that is accusative. If there is no motion at all or random motion going nowhere in particular, then that is usually dative. Remember, this applies only to the two-way prepositions.
6
Wir gehen ins Kino. (in das, accus.) We're going to the movies. (motion towards) Wir sind im Kino. (in dem, dativ) We're at the movies/cinema. (location)
7
Lets loot at a few more examples: Would this be accusative or dativ? Accusative – This is because the sentence is saying that the cube is going ins (in das) water, describing where the cube is moving. (motion towars water) It is asking “Wohin?”
8
Don’t forget that “in” is a two way preposition, meaning that you decide whether it is dativ or accusative by seeing if It answers the question “wo” or “wohin”. In the previous example the sentence was answering the question “wohin”, meaning that it was indeed assusative.

Example 2: In this example, it would dativ. Why? Because the cube is in the water. The sentence is aswering “wo”, meaning that the object takes the dativ case. (it is describing the cubes “location”)
