1 Welcome to Seminar: Developmental Stages Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up. ~Pablo Picasso It will be helpful to have your course books nearby. Feel free to chat with each other. We will begin class at 9:00PM ET!

2 Seminar Agenda Questions Unit 5 Project Theories Related to Art Components of Art Education

3 Unit 5 Project Your project for Unit 5 is to create a PowerPoint presentation identifying successful attributes of a creative Early Childhood Care Professional. This should be the type of presentation that could be presented to students considering the profession or to a conference of childcare professionals. Before you start your project, read this article Teaching With A Multicultural Perspective Teaching With A Multicultural Perspective As part of your project, address the issue of ensuring equal access to creative opportunities. Provide suggestions for integrating minority language students into creative activities in the classroom. What steps should the early childhood care professional take to identify eligible minority language students in programs for gifted and talented?

4 If you are unable to work with PowerPoint, you should create the same type presentation for the overhead using Microsoft Word. It should be the type of presentation that could be presented to students considering the profession or to a conference of childcare professionals. It should be a minimum of five pages in length, not including the title page. The presentation should be a minimum of five slides in length, not including the title page. You can use the template provided or you may create your own.

5 Theories Related to Art Let’s take a look at the different theories related to art. After, explain which theory or theories you think provide greater insight into the influence of art on the development of young children.

6 Constructivist Theory Piaget and Vygotsky Describes learning as a process that is influenced by children’s level as thinking as they interact with the world around them. Children develop heirarchical stages and proceed in a predictable pattern

7 A Way of Expressing Feeling Art is viewed as an emotional outlet that allows children to release inner emotions. Art therapists – how do they use children’s artwork?

8 Social Development Children have the opportunity to work in small groups during art. They can see other children’s ideas. Children are able to use diverse materials in multiple ways.

9 Sensory Learning Art provides opportunities to feel fabrics, see colors and shapes, smell play dough, etc. Using the five senses involves active involvement of the child. Refinement of the senses is related to reading and writing.

10 Visual Perception Based on the assumption that children draw what they see. Believed that children can become better observers when guided to focus on specific features.

11 Left Brain-Right Brain Left brain specializes in logical operations Right brain specializes in visual-spatial operations Art serves as a bridge for the two hemispheres

12 Spatial Intelligence Children may be talented in specific areas and learn in different ways. For some, art may be the best way to learn.

13 Theories Related to Art Which theory or theories do you think provide greater insight into the influence of art on the development of young children? Why?

14 Components of Art Education Describe what the components are that "art education" has identified as needed in a quality art program and how they can be included in an early childhood classroom.
