Cool chemistry of the day… Antimatter Antimatter is exactly what you might think it is -- the opposite of normal matter Positrons - Electrons with a positive instead of negative charge. Anti-protons - Protons that have a negative instead of the usual positive charge.

Topic 4 – Classifying elements Read pages 116 - 125

Element Is made up of only one kind of atom. All atoms of an element are identical. The symbols are always one Capital letter, They may also be followed by a lower case letter

Elements Examples – C – carbon – Ca – calcium – Co – cobalt

What element is it?

Elements Elements can be grouped together based on similar properties, called families.

Activity Symbols for Elements – page 117: 1 - 5 Work in partners to answer the questions and look up the information.

Metals Are solids (except mercury) Good conductors of heat and electricity Shiny, malleable, ductile Metals are found under the stairs – Lithium, sodium, copper, silver, aluminum

Alkali Metals Very reactive All group I metals – Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Fr

Alkaline Earth Metals All group II Metals React vigorously with some substances, but are not as reactive as the alkali metals. For example Magnesium reacts with water less vigorously than sodium Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ra

Non-metals Some can be solid, liquid, or gas Do not conduct heat or electricity Not shiny or ductile Are found to the right of the staircase – Oxygen, nitrogen, fluorine, chlorine

Halogens These are the most reactive non- metals These are group VII non-metals – F, Cl, Br, I, At

Noble Gases These elements are non-reactive. They will not react. These are the group VIII elements. – He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, Rn

Metalloids Have properties of metals and non- metals Brittle, not ductile May conduct electricity Are found sitting on or under the stairs – B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te, Po, At

Lab: Metal or non-metal? You will be observing the properties of eight materials to determine if they are metal or non-metal. You will look at: lead, wood, iron, plastic, zinc, aluminum, carbon, copper

Done the lab? Page 125 #1 - 5
