Understanding Positive and Negative numbers M.6.NS.5 understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.

What are positive and negative numbers Positive numbers are numbers that are larger than zero. Negative numbers are numbers less than zero. Zero is not positive or negative since that is where you begin.

When counting or reading a number line from left to right: Positive numbers go up The farther away from zero the larger Negative numbers go down The farther away from zero the smaller
