Design meaningful lessons with age-appropriate instructional materials, activities and community involvement to enhance CBI experiences.

6. Why Community Based-Instruction? TN Deinstitutionalization lawsuit: People First v. Arlington Developmental Center (1997) and U. S. v. Tennessee (2005)

7. What is Community-Based Instruction? It is a practical, "hands-on" instructional method It prepares students to function as productive adults by giving them the opportunity to apply basic skills in real-life community settings

8. What does Community-Based Instruction Deliver? It provides a continuum of instruction in basic life skills through five domains: o Academics o Daily Living o Employment o Community o Recreation and Leisure

9. Community-Based Instruction Guidelines Prior to CBI participation, Teachers must: o Attend CBI training each school year to request transportation for CBI o Submit completed CBI Request for Transportation Forms A and B o Collect data on each objective being taught for all students o Obtain a Parent Approval Form for each student o Have a completed Student Emergency Information Form for each student on file o Have completed Staff Emergency Information Form(s) on file

CBI Procedural Guidelines Review Shelby County Schools and your school’s calendar before scheduling any Community-Based Instruction (CBI) activities http://www.scsk12.org/calendar/ September 5, 2016, is the last date to submit all CBI Request for Transportation Forms. CBI Transportation Forms submitted late will not be approved. All normal CBI activities will start the week of October 3, 2016 and end the week of April 28, 2017. Do not schedule a CBI pickup before 9:30 a.m. and all Community- Based Instruction activities must take place inside Shelby County. CBI time frame is limited to 3 hours.

29. CBI Procedural Guidelines Complete the CBI Request for Transportation Forms A and B. Save as an Excel 97-2003 Workbook (Please do not alter the forms). All incomplete CBI Request for Transportation Forms will be returned to the teacher. After Forms A and B have been signed and approved by the principal email or scan a copy to lawrencecs@scsk12.org. Send the original approved hard copy (with principal’s signature) by Board mail, to Carman S. Lawrence, Bond Building, 3rd Floor.lawrencecs@scsk12.org You will receive a copy of your final approved CBI Request for Transportation Forms A and B by school mail and a confirmation letter by email.
