Mount Etna last erupted on the 3rd of December, 2015. 2

3. What causes a volcano to erupt?
Magma rises through cracks or weaknesses in the Earth's crust. When this pressure is released, magma explodes to the surface causing a volcanic eruption. The lava from the eruption cools to form new crust. Over time, after several eruptions, the rock builds up and a volcano  forms. 3

Close all windows, doors, and fireplace or woodstove dampers.
Turn off all fans and heating and air conditioning systems.
