Do Now for 10/10/13 Take out 3E and get it ready to hand in. Review for Quiz HW: Complete Procedure for A10

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Today’s Target: I will design a procedure to determine the density of two unknown solids. Collect #3E Quiz Introduce A10

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Read Activity A10 (page A-41) Create a procedure to find the density of unknown solids from our original mixture. You should have: Materials list Safety precautions DETAILED procedure steps Data table Consider: Which equipment and procedures will give you the most accurate measurements Record your measurements for length to the nearest 0.1 cm. If you are measuring volume in mL, round to the nearest mL. Be specific!!!

A-10 Procedure (pd16-17) 1) Take object and find its mass by using triple beam balance 2) fill a graduated cylinder with 30 ml of water 3) Place object in graduated cylinder and measure difference of water before and after object was put in 4) Find density by dividing mass / volume 5) Repeat steps 1-4 with new object

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Do Now for 10/11/13 Take out your procedure Take out Student Sheet 10.1 HW: NoneNone

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Lab safety Gather data Record data Clean up. Complete Student Sheet 10.1

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Follow your procedure to gather data Make more than 1 set of measurements and calculate the density several times to make sure your results are accurate. If you notice a mistake or missing part of your procedure, correct it. Clean up Wash your hands.

A10 Density of Unknown Solids What do you notice about the data on Student Sheet 10.1? Their data is recorded to the nearest 0.01 and 0.5 mL because they are using more accurate measuring devices. Complete the calculations on sheet 10.1 Use the data that you gathered along with the data on Student Sheet 10.1 to determine the identity of the unknown metals. See the table “Densities of Selected Solids” from A9 for help. Complete Student Sheet 5.1 Chemical Safety Data Sheet with information on the metals.

Do Now for 10/15/13 Take out A10 HW: Complete analysis 1,2, 4 A10 will be checked tomorrow Test on Friday on Activities A6 through A10 Bring a calculator tomorrow!

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Today’s target: I will be able to calculate the densities and identify the unknown metals. Really cool world breaking record related to the density of air! Really cool world breaking record related to the density of air! Free fall with data Complete Part B from Activity A10 Analysis 1, 2, 4 Key Points Vocabulary

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Part B: Steps 11 through 14 on page A-44 Use the data that you gathered along with the data on Student Sheet 10.1 to determine the identity of the unknown metals. See the table “Densities of Selected Solids” from A9 (page A-40) for help.

A10 Density of Unknown Solids Analysis questions 1 through 4 on page A-44 ON YOUR OWN! Key Point for A10: Scientists think critically and logically to make the relationship between evidence and an explanation. Ex: Our density calculations may not have matched exactly, but we know there will be error in our measurements. So, logically the metals with the closest density numbers to ours are most likely the metals in question.

A10 Vocabulary 1. Qualitative: Description, observation or analysis of a substance based on its qualities. 2. Quantitative: Description, observation or analysis of a substance based on measurements.

A10 Check Write up: Title, Challenge, Safety – 5 points Clearly written Procedure – 15 points Data table – 5 points Analysis 1 through 4 – 8 points (2 points each) Additional Worksheet (10.1) – 5 points Key Point with example – 5 points Vocabulary (2 words) – 4 points Total = 47 points

Do Now for 10/16 Take out A10 HW: Test on Friday on A7 through 10
