8 What comes next The lack of progress toward democracy is another concern: many Americans have worried that if China’s authoritarian governmment sustains its rapid economic growth, China will challenge the “Washington consensus” concerning free markets and liberal politics with a “Beijing consensus” promoting authoritarian governments producing rapid economic growth and social stability.

Both countries declare a desire to normalise relations. 1979 - Diplomatic relations established with the US 1999 - Nato bombs the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, souring Sino-US relations. 2001- April - Diplomatic stand-off over the detention of an American spy plane and crew after a mid-air collision with a Chinese fighter jet. 2002 - February - US President George W Bush visits, on the 30th anniversary of President Nixon's visit to China - the first by a US president. 2009 - Hillary Clinton calls for deeper US-China partnership on first overseas tour as secretary of state. 2010 - The US calls on Beijing to investigate the cyber attacks, saying China has tightened censorship. China condemns US criticism of its internet controls. 2014 May - The US charges five Chinese army officers with industrial cyber-espionage, in the first case of its kind
