1 Internet Concept Development and Web Design for EM-20 Denisse V. Aranda FIU Mechanical Engineering John De Gregory Ph.D, P.E. FIU Applied Research Center Purpose The objective of this project was to develop a webpage concept design for the Department of Energy Office of Deactivation and Decommissioning/Facility Management to address internet and intranet web pages. Concepts designs are aimed at engaging the audience through functional, user friendly and visually attractive web pages. Web Design 101 When designing or redesigning a webpage, there are certain parameters that are essential to its success:  Personality - The site’s look and feel should match the subject matter as well as visually align with the intended reader.  Design & Layout – Are the graphics and template adequate for the subject matter?  Reader Usability - The site would need to be understandable to the user, using a vocabulary that they would be familiar with and defining technical terms.  Functionality - The information posted on the site must be accessible and useful to the user as well as make it easy for them to find the information they need.  Meeting Expectation - provide the user with motivation to continue to visit the site for additional information that may be pertinent to their needs. Technical Applications to Consider for EM  Wikis - collaborative development of a clean up approach by the D&D community drawing from the lessons learned and best practices of several sites and organizations.  RSS - The feed would provide the workforce with a method for learning about ongoing events, similar projects around the world, and breakthroughs in the industry.  Blog –Blog would be great for the EM portal because it offers to provide information distribution in a cost efficient, useful, and low-maintenance manner.  Podcasts - Podcasts are extremely versatile. EM could be interested in podcasts that range from EM conferences and training video, to video supplied by contractors and private industry.  Geotagging – The USA map with the vast locations of DOE site gives prestige and credibility to the magnitude of work done by EM and could lend greatly towards a more robust stewardship legacy into the future. Future Work This investigation into internet concept development and web design can be further enhanced by using a more powerful software, such as Microsoft Expression Web. This new software integrates the best of Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create truly unique and functional web pages. The collaboration of the EM staff is also instrumental in this endeavor. Intended Audience A website is a type of information product that needs to market to its consumers. The target audience should dictate the type of content, its form, and the functionality of the webpage. An internal survey was conducted of EM staff regarding the intended audience. Due to the existence of the EM Portal, it was unanimously decided that the webpage should be geared toward people in industry as well as students and educators. Web Design for EM-23 The EM-23 homepage will consist of images are aligned along the top of the screen with a subscript to redirect the picture to the sub- sections webpage. This allows for the individual programmatic areas to have their own webpage that will provide the user with relevant information as it relates to it. Also, “Meet the People of EM” was very popular among the staff, it humanized and makes D&D relatable.
