How can development in the rainforest become more sustainable? We are learning to…. Define the term sustainable Explore possible ways forward Suggest how it can make life more sustainable in the Amazon

What does sustainable mean? THINKPAIR SHARE Sustainable means it (whatever the concept maybe) can carry on into the future without harming the needs of the environment or future generations. In this case we need to protect the rainforest whilst also looking at ways in which the local people and the countries can develop.

“Brazil needs to exploit the Amazon's resources to develop, so leaving it untouched is not an option…..” Commercial logging Cattle ranching Road building Mining Oil exploration Why can Brazil not just put a stop to the causes of deforestation????? Post your point of view.....

Key terms and definitions DeforestationThe cutting down of trees AfforestationThe planting of trees Slash and burnA form of subsistence farming in tropical rainforests where some trees are felled and land is cleared by burning before being re-planted. ConservationThe thoughtful use of resources and management of the landscape to protect ecosystems and cultural features Selective management system A way of sustainably managing deforestation in the tropical rainforests.

How can development in the rainforest be more sustainable? ImpactsStrategies/management Social Impacts1. 2. 3. Environmental Impacts 1. 2. Economic Impacts 1. 2.

Local ways of life have been affected, e.g. Some Brazilian rubber farmers have lost their jobs as rubber trees have been cut down. Some tribes have been forced to move as their land was taken for cattle ranching and sugar plantations There is conflict between land owners and tribespeople as they disagree over how the land should be used, e.g. in 2009 in Peru there were riots over how land was used and many people lost their lives. Many species of wildlife are being endangered as their habitats are destroyed, e.g. endangered species increased from 218 in 1989 to 628 in 2008. Increased global warming as carbon dioxide is released. The Amazon holds approx.100 billion tonnes of carbon. Carbon is released as trees are cut down. Farming makes a lot of money for people in the rainforest and the Brazilian government. On 2008 Brazil made $7 billion from cattle trading. The mining industry creates jobs for lots of people, e.g. the Peruvian Mining Company employs 3100 people.

9X3 Sustainable development of the Amazon Rainforest Use the internet to search for 3 strategies that are being used to allow sustainable development in the rainforest. See if there are specific named examples, e.g. The Central Amazon Conservation Area Project has been set up to protect endangered species like the River Dolphin. Write each one onto your worksheet

Which sustainable management strategy will overcome the issue??? Afforestation is taking place e.g. in Peru there are plans to plant more than 100, 000km² by 2018. Selective logging is being enforced in certain rainforests, e.g. in part of the Amazon mahogany logging is banned and wood will be seized from illegal loggers. Ecotourism is being developed and is rapidly increasing as people are educated in rainforest conservation. Most countries have environmental laws to protect the rainforest, e.g. the Brazilian Rainforest Code states that 50-80% of private land, must be kept and cannot be sold for development. Large areas of the Amazon basin are National Parks. This means the Central Amazon Conservation Area protects endangered species like River Dolphins. Many countries within the Amazon basin have reduced their debt by signing up to the rainforest protection treaty which allows sustainable development of the rainforest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJ8QJGahjzo

For a tropical rainforest you have studied, describe the impacts of deforestation and the strategies used to reduce deforestation.. (8marks) Name and locate your example. I have studied……………..This can be found …… Describe the impact of deforestation and discuss how this is being sustainably managed (x3) One impact of deforestation is…….. And this is being managed by……….. Always use specific detail when possible Think carefully about SPaG and QWC

Impacts of deforestation As a pod, work together to write down 3 impacts of deforestation One impact of deforestation is……… Sustainable management strategies Swap your post its with the next table. On the back of their impact write a strategy that will allow a more sustainable approach. A method of sustainable management to overcome this is…… One impact of deforestation is the reduction of photosynthesis and an increase in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. A strategy to overcome this is afforestation. The replanting of tree saplings lessens the impact of deforestation allowing some photosynthesis to take place

VF6=LINK IMPACT AND STRATEGY VF7=ADD IN ONE MORE IMPACT AND STRATEGY

Describe how forests can be sustainably managed (8marks) Success Criteria:- Name and locate an example. I have been studying the………..This can be found in………. Describe the negative impacts of deforestation and how sustainable management can lead to sustainability (x3) One impact of deforestation is…..and this can be sustainably managed by……… I have been studying the Amazon rainforest which can be found in the continent of South America. One impact of deforestation is the reduction of photosynthesis and an increase in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. This can be sustainably managed by afforestation. The replanting of tree saplings lessens the impact of deforestation allowing some photosynthesis to take place. Another impact of deforestation is the destruction of habitat for wildlife and vegetation. This can be sustainably managed by creating National Parks. This means the Central Amazon Conservation Area protects endangered species like River Dolphins. A final impact is that some tribes are being forced from their homes. This can be sustainably managed by environmental laws to protect the rainforest, e.g. the Brazilian Rainforest Code states that 50-80% of private land, must be kept and cannot be sold for development.
