My name is Mrs. Veronica Mondragon and I will be your Social Studies Teacher this year! It is my hope that all my students learn much more than the standard curriculum this year. It is my hope that each child learns about him/herself as an individual and as a member of our global community. My educational philosophy can be summed up by Aristotle, himself: “Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” I firmly believe that making connections between the curriculum and students’ daily lives in not only relevant, but imperative. I believe it is my duty to capture your child’s heart and passion in whatever we are studying, in hopes that your child learns not only how to be a good student, but to become a role model for others, and a positive contributor in our global community. Plenty of pencils and pens 1 red pen Highlighters 1 Five Star College Ruled Notebook (3 subjects max) Glue stick Crayons/markers 1 divider in binder labeled Social Studies Scissors Ruler Pouch for supplies *If you cannot get materials, please see me so I can help! Rewards: 1.Class parties 2.Words of praise 3.Privileges in the classroom 4.Front of the lunch line passes 5.Homework passes 6.Positive phone calls home 7.Boast-its 8.Friday Battles 9.Props 2 Peeps Consequences: Students who fail to adhere to class and distract others from learning will only jeopardize their own grades. Each week students earn 20 points for proper behavior. If a student does not follow rules, he/she will lose points. Every Friday parents/guardians are informed on their child’s behavior for the week. Playing with objects, such as rubber bands or any other inappropriate items NOT related to lessons/lectures will be taken away without warning. If student wants item back, parent/guardian must pick it up; otherwise student will earn it back on the last day of school. Extreme and consistent behavior issues will merit immediate counselor/administration intervention as appropriate, as well as, a parent phone call the minute disruption occurs. A parent-teacher conference may be advised to discuss an alternative action plan, such as a behavior contract. The action plan will set forth specific goals for student.

2 #1 Every day is divided between “teacher time” and “student time” A.During teacher time, I will be lecturing, giving instructions, facilitating, and working with students. This time requires full attention from ALL students. B.During student time, students are free to sharpen pencils, throw away trash, obtain materials, use restroom, work on tasks, projects, group work, whisper with neighbors, get a drink of water, etc. (however discussing topics off task is NOT an option) #2 The Grading Scale is divided by the following: Assessments- 50% of overall grade Classwork-30% of overall grade Homework-20% of overall grade Students will receive a pink sheet that will list assignments and announcements. Most of the homework will be on the left side of their notebooks or on their blogs. Students will always be given opportunities to redo homework if not done on time or if done incorrectly without penalty as long as it is turned in by final Notebook Check Time! #3 Late Work Policy Students will be given 3 late work passes for the year. Homework or projects not turned in on the day of Notebook Checks or deadline will NOT be accepted without a late work pass. Late work pass will only be worth 50% of total points possible. If work is incomplete or incorrect, additional points will be deducted. #4 Make-Up Work A.Students are responsible for missed work. B.Students may make up work if they are absent. However, they must submit work within one week (7 days ) or by next Notebook Check from the day they return to school from absence(s). C.Students can find missed work by checking calendar on the Classroom app, asking peers, or obtaining work from makeup folders on the Agenda Board in class during break, lunch, before/after school or during student time. Teacher/Parent Communication Class Website Jupiter Grades Email Green Sheets Pink Sheets Procedures/Policies What is the Social Studies Notebook or SSNB? The SSNB is a portfolio of student work. It is organized in a left-side and right-side format. Every right-side of the notebook will house teacher directed notes/activities, while left-side assignments will showcase student understanding of right-side material in a creative and unique manner. Each left- side “Output” page will be homework. Right-side “Input” pages are classwork. Notebooks will be collected after 10 pages have been completed. Students will receive a rubric on Monday and notebooks are due that Friday. This way, all students have ample time to complete anything that is not finished during the week. This system allows for students to pace themselves when more time is needed. The notebook serves many purposes including practicing organization, time management, and how to effectively use resources. SSNBs are used daily in Social Studies.
