1 On Yer Bike! How to get a full motorcycle licence This session will look at the legal logistics of taking to the road on two wheels

2 Let’s get started – you will need; A provisional licence which will allow you to ride a motorcycle. This is category A You don’t need your own machine as many Approved Training Bodies (ATB’s) have a hire facility. (For bikes and clothing) although I would strongly recommend you have your own safety helmet. Before you can ride solo on the road you must first of all complete a Compulsory Basic Training course (CBT)

3 Motorbike Legislation – it’s a bit complex! You must be 17 years old (16 for a moped) A full car licence will automatically give you provisional m/c entitlement. Provisional entitlement entitles you to ride a m/c up to 125cc. You MUST not ride on motorways or carry a pillion passenger, you MUST display L plates. Provisional entitlement is only valid for 2 years.

4 What is CBT? CBT (compulsory Basic Training) is usually a one day course of basic motorcycle training which will include initial off road training followed by on road supervision and training. You MUST pass your CBT in order to ride solo on the public road. When you pass you will be issued with a DL196 form. This DL196 is only valid for two years.
