Electrical Safety

What is a short circuit? Connection that allows current to take the path of least resistance. Easiest possible path. Path with the least amount of resistance. Current follows the unintended path.

Draw a short circuit?

Short circuits

What’s wrong with that? Unintended path has less resistance so the current flows faster causing more heat. Shorts can cause shocks, fires, injury, even death.

Are exposed wires bad? YOU BET!! The short circuit might just be into YOU!!

Answer question 3 about the graph on top of page 72 Most fires: ◦Cooking equipment Least fires: ◦Heating and cooling equipment

What is one way to protect people from electric shock? Provide and alternate path for electric current.

What does it mean to be grounded? When charges are able to flow directly from the circuit into the Earth in the event of a short circuit.

What is the function of the third prong? Connects any metal pieces of the appliance to the ground wire to the building. A safety measure.

What does a fuse do? Prevent circuits from overheating

What is a fuse? Device that contains a thin strip of metal that will melt if there is too much current through it. When the thin strip of metal “blows” or melts it breaks the circuit. Common phrases: Don’t blow a fuse. She blew a fuse…

Blown fuse

What is a circuit breaker? Reusable safety switch that breaks the circuit when the current gets to high.

What is the difference between a fuse and a circuit breaker? A circuit breaker is reusable. A fuse is disposable.
