Lv4: Recap the term refraction. Lv5: Explain why a lens alters the direction of light. Lv6: Analyse how the thickness and shape of a lens alters the light. Lenses and Light Entrance Activity Key Words Lens Refraction Converging Diverging Convex / Concave Draw a diagram to illustrate light as it passes through a glass block. Include all key terms and use a ruler and pencil.

Mini Whiteboard Activity Reflection and Refraction Recap Activity 1 Draw a ray diagram to illustrate reflection. Activity 2 Draw a ray diagram to illustrate refraction. Activity 3 Draw a ray diagram to illustrate light passing from a gas medium to a liquid medium. Activity 4 Draw a ray diagram to illustrate light passing from a solid medium to a liquid medium.

Student Reading Activity Light in a vacuum travels at a constant speed of 3x10 8 m/s. When light passes through a medium (gas, liquid, solid) It slows down its speed. This causes it to change direction and turn. The denser the medium the slower light passes through it. How do you think this affect the size of the angle of refraction? Speed of light 1)State the speed of light. 2)Arrange dense mediums in order of least dense to most dense. 3)Write down three things you have learnt from reading this passage of text. 4)Answer the question at the end of the passage of text. Learning Activity Air Glass block Water Vacuum

Key Word Alerts! Convex Concave The word concave means curving in or hollowed inward, as opposed to convex. Convex means curving out or extending outward (compare concave).

Learning Activity Light through lenses Using the three slit grid, pass three rays of light through the following lens. Investigate how each lens bends the light and illustrate your findings in your books. Bi-convex Bi-concave Planoconvex

Bi-convex Learning Activity Light through lenses Look at the two lenses below, how do you think they will alter the three rays of light? Make a prediction in your books and then investigate how each lens alters the light. (Make sure you illustrate your findings in your books)

Lv4: Recap the term refraction. Lv5: Explain why a lens alters the direction of light. Lv6: Analyse how the thickness and shape of a lens alters the light.
