Pedagogies for the Virtual Campus 1. Broader issues 2. Subject areas –North West –West Midlands –Yorkshire and the Humber –North East –South East and South West 3. Wish Lists 4. Other observations from the meetings 5. JISC 6. Recap subject areas

Broader Issues Issues around remission to participate in the project Issues around the functioning of the VCs –Paying BT invoices –Not everyone has access to a functioning VC (the ‘Buddy system’ in Y&H) –Various ‘technology’ issues (to do with both hardware and software) Communication Issues: –Emails through College or prison systems only, not through contact with home email addresses

Subject Areas – North West The group decided to focus on the areas of Construction, Catering and the associated Self Employment. It was agreed to produce a ‘flow-chart’ to aid thinking and planning.

North West -Notes Chart: Shows the various functions in a prison, expressed in an offender’s learning journey It then seeks to create links between them, and the vocational courses Construction and Catering. It then places them in a virtual prison. The chart also incorporates the elements of the ‘wish list’ (eg Jamie Oliver, IKEA, recipes)

Subject Areas – West Midlands Retail and Distribution Construction Catering Self Employment All ‘wrap around skills’ including numeracy

West Midlands -Notes The ‘Virtual Village’. Prisoners can live and work in the ‘outside’ world whilst being in prison. They can ‘work’ in supermarkets and shops, on building sites, in warehouses, in kitchens. These locations link to the vocational areas chosen. The high security estate and the VC – languages to L3; a variety of Distance Learning opportunities (e.g. OU, NEC, Oxford)

Subject Areas – Yorks and Humber Catering ‘Greening’ Self Employment ‘Wrap around skills’ Provision for High Security Prisons

Yorkshire & Humberside - Notes Greening: Solar panels, water harvesting, waste management, sustainability theory. Strategy for the VC: Providing vocational skills to be used both inside and outside the prison. Wrap around skills: Focus on employability; Virtual interviews; workplace behaviour, eg raising issues of incorrect pay, ‘If I’m late’, preparation for different environments. The high security estate: Educational issues that are wider than vocational training need to be addressed by the VC.

Subject Areas - The North East The proposed subject areas are: –Construction –Retail –Catering Colleagues from the North East are particularly interested in Customer Services but would like to be involved in any of the other areas if/when they are developed.

The South and the South West Brief verbal reports from colleagues in these areas please.

Wish Lists (1) Using employer created videos to support vocational training (eg IKEA and kitchen fitting) Jamie Oliver – a video to motivate prisoners Recipes on the system On-line form filling facility Pdf reader Flash Functional Skills incorporated into the VC The VC as an exam centre – as many on-line exams as possible Health and Safety ‘taught’ in the VC (part of training for working in a prison) Food Hygiene ‘taught’ in the VC. Another ‘work in prison’ requirement ‘Screens’ to be inspiring and motivating

Wish Lists (2) A ‘moodle’ or ‘Google’ to be developed to make access to content much easier. Much quicker response to system errors (eg errors in answers to Hairdressing test- taking too long to resolve) Can the VC become a centre for delivering the theory part of a vocational course? (From a prisoner at HMP Kennet) To answer the question: “Who changes the software after the project is finished?” To answer the question: Will all prisons get all of the content that is produced? Will it be loaded onto all VC systems as a matter of course? Can we have a job description for Pedagogy Coaches?

Other Observations Some ideas that give ‘shape’ to the role of a VC: –Vocational Training / Vocational Training Theory –Improving interpersonal skills (without role play) –‘Outside in’. Working in the ‘virtual’ world –Exams on line A selling point: Vocational Training for work roles inside and outside of prison A selling point: Prisoners can experience the outside world ‘virtually’ in the VC.

JISC Colleagues from JISC have been fully involved in the Regional meetings. In Yorkshire and the Humber and the North East there are proposals for JISC to organise a day’s event to showcase resources currently available. This would appear to be an appropriate activity for all areas.

Recap subject areas Construction Catering Retail and Distribution ‘Greening’ Self employment Consideration of the high security estate (languages? Distance Learning courses?) Literacy (Reading, Writing, Speaking & Listening) Problem solving Teamwork & Collaboration Customer skills Numeracy
