2 Aims and objectives Aim: To raise awareness of career development strategies and activities for learners with additional support needs Objectives By the end of the session participants will be able to: Outline the career development process for learners with a broad range of abilities Identify tools and techniques for enabling the decision making process and setting short term goals for learners with a range of abilities Research relevant support networks and protocols for referrals Explore a range of options for future career development and employability.

3 This session has been designed for tutors, mentors, supporters and/or trainers to deliver careers development for people with a broad range of needs. Find a partner, introduce yourself and your organisation, complete the given exercise individually and then discuss it with your partner. 10 minutes The resources in your pack have been pitched at Entry Level Three with the intention that people supporting the learners will be able to mediate them if necessary. Introduction

4 Delivery of the session - checklist Is the venue accessible? Have you got all the support in place that your learner will need? Social Worker/professional support Carer or parent Have you got information in an accessible format? Symbols Signing Easy reading (Entry level 1-3) Have you done some local research into possible opportunities? Local links with leaning difficulties partnerships e.g Housing Associations, Employment Support programmes.

5 Careers philosophy and models Egan’s three stage model The Egan model aims to help the speaker address 3 main questions: 'What is going on?' 'What do I want instead?' 'How might I get to what I want?‘ Egan (2007) Rogers’ person-centred approach to interviewing Empathetic understanding Acceptance - unconditional positive regard Genuine – congruence. Rogers, C. R. 6 First meeting What’s going on for the learner? Gaining trust Confidentiality – sharing information with the people who can help Contracting.

7 What do they really want? Using resources to help them to explain what they want What are their aspirations? How can we help to explore ideas? How can we help them to articulate them?

8 How are you going to help them to get what they want? What skills do they have already? What skills do they need? How are we going to help Who else needs to be engaged to provide a circle of support?

9 Support Travel – are they able to learn the skills of independent travel? Independent living skills – shopping, cooking, food safety, household management Social groups Local group – inclusive community activities.

10 What support is available from Job Centre Plus? Explore training opportunities at: Colleges Adult & Community Learning Local authorities Specialist training providers Providers with specific contracts to work with people with additional needs such as ESF funded provision. Employability

11 Action Planning Simple actions which lead to a goal Support for implementing the action plan – who will help? Can the actions be part of the Care Plan? Review progress Continuous development – keeping up the momentum.
