2 What is Prehistory? The period of time before people started writing things down is called Prehistory. Humans began to write things down 5,000 years ago. When stuff started to get written down, that's the start of Recorded History

3 Human Origin Eras (Era=long period of time) Prehistory is divided into 2 Eras. Paleolithic Era: =Old Stone Age 2.5 million BCE to 8,000 BCE Neolithic Era =New Stone Age 8,000 BCE to 3,000 BCE

4 Hominids (Humans) living in this era were nomadic Lived in clans (20-30 people) and moved to where the food was (Animal Herds). Everyone in the clan had a specific job Men-Hunted Women-Gathered (wood, food, etc.) Learned to make fire Developed oral language Created Cave Art Paleolithic Era (OLD STONE AGE)

5 Cave Art Hunter Gatherers lived in caves during the winter time. Created Cave Art Was a way to communicate information. Religion, Hunting Techniques, etc… Paleolithic Era (OLD STONE AGE)

6 First to make basic tools Stone Blades Made hunting and cutting easier (Handy Man) Paleolithic Era (OLD STONE AGE) Homo Habilis 2 million years ago(man of skill)

7 Made more advanced tools Ax, spear First to use fire Warmth, Cooking, Protection First to develop spoken language. Named objects (plants and animals ) Walked fully upright Homo Erectus 1.6 million to 30,000 years ago (upright man) Paleolithic Era (OLD STONE AGE)

8 Species name for modern humans. Emerged in East Africa and migrated. First to develop religious ceremonies (Funeral) Homo Sapiens 100,000 to 400,000 years ago(wise men) Paleolithic Era (OLD STONE AGE)

9 Early Humans migrated from Africa to Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas

11 Neolithic Era (NEW STONE AGE) Agriculture Begins 10,000 yrs ago Agriculture (Farming) began by accident Climate changed and allowed for longer growing seasons Allowed for nomads to no longer have to move around Created specialized tools to farm the land and ensure food

12 Neolithic Era (NEW STONE AGE) Domestication of Animals Domestication- taming of animals horses, dogs, goats, pigs, sheep, camels Nomads herd animals into ravines to kill them for food. Later nomads would herd animals into man-made inclosures.

13 Neolithic Era (NEW STONE AGE) New Tools Cooking utensils such as pots, spatulas, and forks Pottery to cook and eat from used bones to make utensils weaving materials for cloth.

14 How do we study History? Archaeology is the study of prehistoric people and their culture

15 Archaeology and Discovery of Early Civilizations. Archaeology How scientists explore the past. Find and study things that people left behind. The things they discover are artifacts tools, weapons and pottery.

16 Archaeology and Discovery of Early Civilizations. Radiocarbon Dating Archaeologists measure the amount of radioactivity and carbon atoms left in an artifact to tell how old an object is.

17 Archaeology and Discovery of Early Civilizations. Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in England. It is a great circle made from 30 huge stones. About 250 workers would have moved the stones from as far as 135 miles away.

18 Archaeology and Discovery of Early Civilizations. First Settlements The Fertile Crescent encompasses the following countries: Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Lebanon, Kuwait, Israel, Turkey.

20 First Settlements Aleppo & Jericho are 2 of the earliest known towns. Jericho is known for being the first city with a wall surrounding it. Built between 8,000-10,000 BCE One of the first permanent human settlements Aleppo was founded in 6,000 BCE Modern day Syria One of Earth’s oldest cities
