4. Introduction to E8 E8 BACKGROUND The Elimination 8 (E8) Initiative is a coordinated, eight-country effort to achieve the historic goal of eliminating malaria in four southern African countries by 2020 (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, and Swaziland), and to subsequently pave the way for elimination in four more by 2030 (Angola, Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). The E8 brings the four mainland countries targeted for malaria elimination (the “frontline” countries of the E8) together with their middle to high-transmission neighbours to the north (the “second line” countries), in order to implement malaria control and elimination strategies in a coordinated fashion.

E8 Strategic Intent  To strengthen regional coordination in order to achieve elimination in each of the E8 member countries;  To achieve and maintain the regional elimination agenda at the highest political levels within the E8 countries;  To promote knowledge management, quality control and policy harmonization to accelerate progress towards elimination;  To facilitate the reduction of cross border malaria transmission, and;  To secure resources to support the regional elimination plan, and to ensure long term sustainable financing for the region’s elimination ambitions.

6. E8 Sponsorship  E8, through a competitive selection process, will select 6 research candidates from the SADC region to participate in the 2 nd Annual South Africa Malaria Conference. Sponsored participants will be those whose research is directly applicable to the E8 strategy, and furthers malaria elimination scholarship and research in the region.  This sponsorship is inclusive of all flights and accommodation;  Details:  Sponsor 6 researchers/students/professor  Sponsor return flights  Sponsor accommodation and meals
