Miss Sasaki Arranged marriage fell apart after injury Bother and sister escape injury, and are put into an orphanage; Miss Sasaki applies to work there to be near them Went to university and graduated as a nursery school teacher – teaches for 20 years Gets degree in accounting, qualifies as third class clerk Had three major surgeries on her leg 1957 - Lived in a convent and became a nun Found greatest ability was to help people die in peace Spent 25 Years as Mother Superior at the convent = received the Hail Mary award Taught us to never give up and to share ourselves with others; live life to the fullest no matter what

Dr Fujii 1948: Built a clinic at the site of his old clinic – treated about 80 patients per day – became well-known plastic surgeon, aiding those disfigured by the bombing Friends with Father Kleinsorge Eager to make friends with Americans daughters married doctors and his sons went to medical school Didn’t suffer any radiation symptoms – became a playboy in Japan, followed Japanese baseball Injured by a gas leak in his American style house (on New Years Eve, left stove on, saved by grandson) 1964 Was a severely brain damaged, lived for 11 years Died in 1973, wife and son sue over $ Teaches us to live life to the fullest because you never know when it might end

Mrs. Nakamura Became weak and destitute, in and out of hospital from radiation sickness To make $ for family: she sewed and cleaned for neighbors, pushed a fish cart and collected $ for Hiroshima paper, wrapped mothballs at a company (13yrs) Developed round worm and had to sell husband’s sewing machine for treatment = saddest day of life Receives a 2 room house Toshio sells newspapers to pay for high school, graduates and gets a job, buys her a new sewing machine 55 – began feeling at home in her body, joins study group for Japanese folk music Receives a war widow’s pension ($65/month) Teaches us to always have courage and hope even when times are hard

Father Kleinsorge Suffers from radiation sickness Cousels sick in hospitals, wants to rebuild the church People begin joking that he was married to Japan Changes his name to a Father Takakura Develops kidney problems, then cancer 1976 – slips on ice and fractures vertebrae Nov 1977 – falls into a coma and dies Teaches us the importance of caring for ourselves and each other

Mr. Tanimoto 1948: Went to the United States to raise Money (201 cities, 21 states in 8 months) 1955: was on This is Your Life and they brought the co-pilot of the Enola Gay on to the show without warning Went to San Francisco, and across the US spreading the gospel of peace (anti-atomic weapons) Helped build the Peace Memorial His adopted daughter becomes engaged and her fiancés father decides they shouldn’t get married since her exposure to radiation might cause birth defects in their children; she finds a new partner and they adopt a child together Helped a group of Japanese girls get surgery for their keloid tumors in the United States (Hiroshima Maidens) 1982: retired from the pulpit @ 70 yrs old If you work hard you can reach goal, help Others and make good out of something bad

Dr. Sasaki Took him 10 years to get doctoral degree Had a happy marriage but his father-in-law did not approve of him 1951: Stopped working at the public hospital and began working at a private clinic 1954: Went to father’s town to start his own practice Became an anesthesiologist Had to get his left lung removed due to cancer, continued smoking after operation 1972 – wife died of breast cancer 1977: Received and $80,000 loan and built a 4-story concrete clinic, enjoyed helping the aging survivors using the lastest technology Began to develop a reputation for being strange and eccentric We learn that money does not buy happiness
