28 The tradition of slicing and sharing the New Year’s Cake (Vasilopita)

29 A part of the Comenius team sliced and shared a Vasilopita on January 19, 2009 The New Year’s Cake is usually a bread with sweet taste that we use to slice and share on New Year’s Eve or on the First Day of the New Year. It contains a coin and whoever gains that coin will be the lucky one of the Year. This custom comes from the ancient tradition, but it has fitted to the customs of the contemporary life of the family. New Year’s Cake is connected with Agios Vasilios (Saint Basil) as it has named like that (Vasilopita- in Greek) because of him. The orthodox church honors him every first day of the Year.
