Review from Last Week I.Context is what makes words mean something. Therefore, if we’re going to read the Bible in a way makes sense, we need to read it in “chunks.” In other words, in sections no smaller than a paragraph.

II.Each paragraph or passage in the Bible is organized around one central idea or main point. Every idea has two parts: 1. A subject: what it is talking about. 2. A complement: what it is saying about what it is talking about. Therefore, the goal we need to aim for when we’re reading the Bible is to find the main point of a paragraph or larger passage.

15
Charting a Biblical Book The following method for charting comes from “The Hermeneutical Spiral” by Grant Osborne. Revised and Expanded Edition Intervarsity Press, 2006.
16
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words.
17
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. Try to summarize the whole paragraph.
18
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. Try to summarize the whole paragraph. Be descriptive not prescriptive.

Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. Try to summarize the whole paragraph. Be descriptive not prescriptive. Tip: Read with pen in hand jotting down first impressions as you go.
20
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs.

Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: A repeated phrase/sentence. (E.g. “These are the generations of … Genesis 2:4, 5:1, 6:9,10:1, 11:10, 11:27, 25:12, 25:19, 36:1, 37:2)

24
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: A change in time, location or setting (especially in narratives). (E.g. 1 Sam. 6 – vv. 1-12 in Philistia, vv. 13 – 7:1 in Beth Shemesh)

13 – 7:1 in Beth Shemesh) Shift in audience addressed (especially in epistles). (E.g. Eph. 2:1 Paul shifts from himself “I” to the Ephesians “you”)
26
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: Repetition of a key word or concept stops. (E.g. Between Romans 12:8 & 9 – body/members language stops, love language begins)
27
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: Repetition of a key word or concept stops. (E.g. Between Romans 12:8 & 9 – body/members language stops, love language begins) An explicit heading. (E.g. 1 Cor. 7:1 “Now for the matters you wrote about”)
28
Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: 3.Read the book again and subdivide into major sections by using double lines. (I.e. where are the biggest breaks of thought?)

Charting a Biblical Book 1.Summarize each paragraph in 6 – 8 words. 2.Re-read the book looking for breaks of thought between paragraphs. Clues: 3.Read the book again and subdivide into major sections by using double lines. (I.e. where are the biggest breaks of thought?) Now you have a way of seeing the major parts of the book, their subsections and where exactly the paragraph you’d like to learn about fits into the whole.
30
How Does a Chart Help It Make Sense?
31
Above all it provides context. It gives you a clearer sense of what the overall goals and content of what you’re reading are and this will keep you from making wild errors in what the author intended.

How Does a Chart Help It Make Sense? Above all it provides context. It gives you a clearer sense of what the overall goals and content of what you’re reading are and this will keep you from making wild errors in what the author intended. It also helps you see where the paragraph you’re studying fits in the general flow of things and how important it is in relation to the paragraphs surrounding it.
33
How do I start to figure out what the Main Point of a paragraph might be?
34
Pay attention to the building blocks of the passage and how they fit together.
35
What are the building blocks?
36
The clauses.
37
What are the building blocks? The clauses. A clause is “a group of words containing a subject and predicate” Merriam- Webster

What are the building blocks? The clauses. A clause is “a group of words containing a subject and predicate” Merriam- Webster There are two types of clauses: major and minor. E.g. “Grant is talking” (major clause) or “Because Grant is talking” (minor clause)
40
What are the building blocks? A major clause can stand alone as a sentence. (Grant is talking).
41
What are the building blocks? A major clause can stand alone as a sentence. (Grant is talking). A minor clause cannot stand alone as a sentence (because Grant is talking).
42
What are the building blocks? A major clause can stand alone as a sentence. (Grant is talking). A minor clause cannot stand alone as a sentence (because Grant is talking). “The whole purpose of diagramming is to separate the major and minor clauses and see how the flow of ideas is progressing.” – Grant Osborne

What a diagram looks like Matt. 6:16-18 16 “ TWhenever you fast, do not put on a gloomy face as the hypocrites do, Gfor they neglect their appearance C-Eso that they will be noticed --by men Twhen they are fasting. GTruly I say to you, they have their reward in full. T… when you fast +But you, …, anoint your head and wash your face 18 C? C-E so that your fasting will not be noticed by men, but by your Father Ft-Inwho is in secret; Eand your Father … will reward you. Ft-Inwho sees what is done in secret

How to diagram 2.Separate the major clauses from the minor clauses by indenting the minor clauses. The easiest way to decide whether a clause is major or minor is to look at the connecting words.

TIME OUT!!! Why is this important again?
75
One of the reasons why diagramming is important is because it helps you identify what belongs to the subject of the main point and what belongs to the complement.

Matt. 6:14-15 14 C?-EFor if you forgive others for their transgressions, +your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 --C?-EBut if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions. Therefore, the main subject is the forgiveness of the Father, not his “unforgiveness.” Forgiving others is simply a condition for receiving the forgiveness that the Father is wanting to give. It is fitting that forgiven people must also be forgiving.
