2 2 NTNU as an example Vision: To be internationally outstanding Objective: The entire organization upholds quality at a high international level and several academic environments are in the top international league, measured by international peer review

3 3 Being an international university 10 % of the students are foreigners 35% of the doctoral students are foreigners 25% of the academic staff are foreigners

4 4 Being international…… In 10 years: from 4 to 34 international master programmes In same period: 10 % increase international doctoral students Each year: nearly 200 new foreign researchers recruited

6 6 Becoming a more international university To reach our goals, we need the best possible academic staff We need people with broad international experience and networks We have to look for many of these people abroad

8 8 Our own people Each year about 200 spend more than 1 month abroad doing research To increase the number: developing a policy to stimulate academic staff to go abroad For instance: Make it mandatory to spend sabbaticals in another country

11 11 NTNU International Researcher Support Assisting with general needs: housing, working permits, taxes, schooling, social welfare, cultural integration, etc. Establishing connections and formal agreements with public authorities and agencies

13 13 Research educaton and researcher career Project for PhD quality development Appraisal interview and career counselling Personal development: mentor programmes, courses in research management, language courses, etc

14 14 EU Charter and Code CC is a set of principles similar to our own policies and priorities CC sets standards for HR development CC emphasizes evaluation

15 15 Evaluating where we are CC demands external evaluation Status: We have formal principles, procedures and plans in order Status 2: We need more effort to stimulate more mobility
