JOHN CABOT Vysotskaya Viktoria Klivach Nastya Yuneva Daria Form 9a

JOHN CABOT (C. 1450 – C. 1499) WAS AN ITALIAN NAVIGATOR AND EXPLORER WHOSE 1497 DISCOVERY OF PARTS OF NORTH AMERICA UNDER THE COMMISSION OF HENRY VII OF ENGLAND IS COMMONLY HELD TO HAVE BEEN THE FIRST EUROPEAN ENCOUNTER WITH THE MAINLAND OF NORTH AMERICA SINCE THE NORSE VIKINGS VISITS TO VINLAND IN THE ELEVENTH CENTURY. THE OFFICIAL POSITION OF THE CANADIAN AND BRITISH GOVERNMENTS IS THAT HE LANDED ON THE ISLAND OF NEWFOUNDLAND.

CABOT'S BIRTHPLACE IS IN ITALY. IN ITALIAN HE IS KNOWN TODAY AS GIOVANNI CABOTO, IN ENGLISH AS JOHN CABOT, IN FRENCH AS JEAN CABOT, AND IN SPANISH AS JUAN CABOTO.

FIRST VOYAGE All that is known about Cabot's first voyage is contained in a letter from John Day to Christopher Columbus. The letter, written in the winter of 1497/8, mostly concerns the 1497 voyage. However, by way of an aside, Day notes that: "Since your Lordship wants information relating to the first voyage, here is what happened: he went with one ship, his crew confused him, he was short of supplies and ran into bad weather, and he decided to turn back. “ Since Cabot only received his patent in March 1496, it is generally assumed that this voyage took place in the summer of that year.

SECOND VOYAGE In early May 1498 from Bristol came second expedition under the command of Cabot - a fleet of five ships. It is believed that John Cabot died on the way, and command of the ship passed to his son Sebastian Cabot.

ON THE SECOND EXPEDITION REACHED US EVEN LESS INFORMATION THAN THE FORMER. UNDOUBTEDLY ONLY THAT BRITISH SHIPS IN 1498 REACHED THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT AND PASSED ALONG THE EASTERN COAST OF THE FAR SOUTH-WEST. SEBASTIAN CABOT TURNED BACK AND RETURNED TO ENGLAND IN THE SAME 1498

ON LARGE GEOGRAPHICAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE SECOND EXPEDITION CABOT WE KNOW NOT FROM ENGLISH, BUT FROM SPANISH SOURCES. ON THE MAP OF JUAN LA BRAIDS APPLIED FAR TO THE NORTH AND NORTH-EAST OF HISPANIOLA AND CUBA, WITH A LONG COASTLINE AND RIVERS CLOSE GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES, THE BAY ON WHICH IS WRITTEN: "THE SEA, THE BRITISH OPEN," AND WITH A FEW ENGLISH FLAG.
