o How to make a complex heavy vehicle to an environment friendly vehicle ? o How to manage a heavy vehicle free from down time ? o How to make a construction vehicle to self – diagnose its conditions? o How to make an optimum maintenance plan without delay for the construction vehicle? 2

VHMS(Vehicle Health Monitoring System) 3

What is mean by VHM or Vehicle Health Monitoring System? 4

Vehicle Health Monitoring System (VHMS) is a system health management that refers to the detection of anomalies and failures of the vehicle. 5

 Several functions must be considered to design a complete VHM system, including sensors, processing, communications, power supply and some form of packaging. 6

 Much of the current vechile health monitoring VHM research has focused on the development and maturation of new detection methods and optimisation of sensors, algorithms for damage, detection and interpretations.  However,an equally important area to be addressed is how to assess, qualify and certify a VHM system for commercial purpose. 7

 Practical implementation of these systems within complex, built-up structures operating in harsh environment is now overlooked.  The field of VHM has progressed significantly in recent years. 8

Study in Detail KOMTRAX (Komatsu Machine Tracking System)  Machine tracking system.  Installed on construction equipment.  Transmit information concerning the location, cumulative hours of operation and operating condition of vehicles. 9

■ How KOMTRAX works? 10

KOMTRAX  Management system use for large equipment in mining.  Enables to obtain detailed information concerning the conditions of machines via satellite communications.  Analyze “vehicle health” and other operating conditions.  Provide the information to jobsite using the Internet from a remote location on real time.  Receive vehicle maintenance on an appropriate timing.  Avoid major technical trouble.  Reduce maintenance expenses and downtime costs. 11

Autonomous Haulage System (AHS)  AHS is a high-speed fleet management system based on super-large dump trucks.. Dump trucks, equipped with a high-precision GPS, an obstacle detection sensor and a wireless network system are controlled from the fleet control operations center for unmanned hauling.  Note:Fleet means fast moving 13

 Information on target course and speed is sent from the fleet management system to dump trucks via the wireless network system(internet), and dump trucks run on the target course at the target speed by assessing their position via GPS. 14

 Loading machines are hydraulic excavators, wheel loaders etc..  GPS for the fleet management system determine the position of their buckets.  The system automatically guides the dump trucks to the designated loading position.  The system also sends information concerning a route to the unloading site to ensure safe and precise unloading. 15

 Prevents collisions between dump trucks and manned machines, such as service vehicles, bulldozers and motor graders, working inside the mine.  If another vehicle or person should come close to the AHS controlled area, the obstacle detection sensor of dump trucks detects it and the concerned dump truck will make an emergency stop to ensure safety. 16

2D/3D Flight planning  Allows the operator to insert, delete, add, and change speed and heading of waypoints while viewing a 2D or 3D geo-rectified environment.  To execute and monitor the plan.  Allows the operator to save and reload any previous flight plans stored on board the Ground Control Station (GCS). 20

Health monitoring  Monitor aircraft’s engine RPM, airspeed, and other performance parameters.  Based upon user-defined limits, the system constantly monitors these health parameters and initiates or prompts appropriate action (e.g. return home, stay on course, return to last known signal link) if problems arise. 21

Advantages  Real-time asset health monitoring.  OEM(Orginal Equipment Manufacturer) and user- defined alarms.  Maintenance time tracking.  Root cause analysis.  Increased equipment productivity and availability.  Reducing maintenance costs through real-time asset health management.  Detection of early signs of wear and aging. 23

Limitations o Costly. o Not applicable to light vehicles. o Not suitable for small jobsites. 24

Applications o In Mining. o In large construction sites. o Aerospace. o For jobsites having nuclear radiation. o For submarines. 25

Conclusion To commersialise VHS system into viable products, they must be able to withstand conventional operating conditions so that they donot need to be replaced within the economic lifetime of the vechicles that are meant to monitor. Requirements for the certification of airborne hardware and softwares are presented from several government 26
