2 BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Overview Oprah Winfrey revolutionized the talk show market with her unique and natural style and rose to become the host of the most watched daytime show on television, which boasts 22 million viewers daily (three-fourths of whom are women). She is the first African American to own her own TV studio. The multitalented Winfrey is also a millionaire businesswoman, a talented actress, owner of a movie production company, and committed philanthropist.

3 Oprah Winfrey was named one of the 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century by Time Magazine, and in 1998 received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Her influence extended to the publishing industry when she began an on-air book club. Oprah Book Club selections

5 As a young child, did you have any idea, any vision, of what you wanted to accomplish? As a young child, I had a vision, not of what I wanted to accomplish, but I knew that my current circumstances --I was raised on a farm with my grandmother for the first six years of my life -- I knew somehow that my life would be different and it would be better. I never had a clear cut vision of what it was that I would be doing. I remember absolutely physically feeling it at around four years old.

8 Role play: Problem 1: Student A has a problem with his friend. He lost 100 yuan last week and he thought it was his friend who took it because he was with him all the time that day. But he can’t make a check on his friend and he doesn’t want to lose his friend. He wonders what to do. Problem 2: Student B has a problem with his parents. He thinks that what his parents say is to ask him to work hard and do well in the college entrance exams. Their goal is his child should go to key university. What they care about is his marks and his health. He is unhappy at home. In this way he can’t get on well with his parents.
