o A complete sentence requires a subject (noun and pronoun) and a predicate (the verb). I watched the entire movie. The boys ran down the hill. I was very sad last night. We were frightened by the storm. A verb shows action or a state of being.

A helping verb comes before the main verb. Sarah will brush her teeth. Sarah has been brushing her teeth. “Sarah” is the subject. “Will” is the helping verb. “Sarah” is the subject. “Has been” are the helping verbs. “Brush” is the main verb. The verb will helps state a future action, will brush her teeth. “Brushing” is the main verb. The verbs has been helps state a continuing action, brushing her teeth.

You add –ed to regular verbs to state a past action or when you use a helping verb ( has, have, had ). There are spelling rules that apply to regular verbs when adding -ed.

start has startedstarted travel traveled have traveled admireadmiredhas admired bakebakedhave baked

tidy has tidiedtidied fry fried have fried hophoppedhave hopped robrobbedhas robbed

Irregular verbs do not end in –ed when stating a past action or when paired with a helping verb. For most irregular verbs, the word changes. When irregular verbs are paired with a helping verb (has, have, or had) it is called a past participle. I ride.I rode.I have ridden. We fall. She ate. She has eaten. She eats. We fell.
