WELLNESS – HOPE – TRUST Trev Bungay, CD June 2016

My Background  Born in Twillingate, NL.  Joined the military in Feb 1997.  Did Basic Training in Saint Jean Sur Richelieu.  Conducted Battle school in Meaford Ont.  Was then sent to Gagetown NB, 2RCR Infantry Battalion.  I served 17 years.  Conducted 3 domestic operations; Quebec Ice Storm; Swiss Air Crash in Peggy’s Cove and Halifax Hurricane.  7 overseas missions; 99 Bosnia, 2001 Africa, 2003 Haiti; 2004 Kabul Afghanistan, 2007 Panjawai, 2010 Kandahar/Panjawai, 2012 Kabul

My Story

 Afghanistan 2007 was full of combat. We lived in mud huts, fought every day for 3 months. We saw a lot of death, Canadian and Taliban.  Got home in August and my life had changed. I lost my sense purpose. I hated everything, got very angry, blamed everyone for problems, was anxious all the time. I became a big ball of hate.  I soldiered on and kept going.  Afghanistan 2010, I was made the security commander for an American Counter IED team. We investigated every IED or explosion in the Kandahar region. Again, a lot of death and stress.  I returned home after 7 months. I had lost it all; family, money, I started using prescription and street drugs as well as alcohol to cope.  Again, I soldiered on and kept going.

My Story  2012 I deployed as part of the command team for a mobile force; 40 troops. We provided a quick reaction force, convoy security for VIP’s, Camp Replenishment, etc.  I was sent home after 7 months to do a career course.  I passed all my tests. Once I passed the final, I took the keyboard and put it through the monitor at work.  I went home and grabbed a bottle of whiskey and some pills. I drank until I couldn't drink anymore. When I awoke in the morning, a buddy had come to check on me. Beside me was a loaded shotgun.  I decided that morning screw the stigma. I needed help.

My Story  I started treatment on base and was taking 20 pills a day. I was on the highest legal dose of sleeping pill. I just couldn’t function. Things didn’t improve much. Now I was angry, unstable but medicated.  I attempted suicide at a hotel in Montreal by swallowing a bunch of sleeping pills. Fortunately I was unsuccessful.  One morning, my 4 year old son came to me and said he was unable to wake me during the night. I was crushed.  Shortly after, a friend committed suicide. I watched his kids crying on his casket.  Those 3 events changed my life.

My Story  I made up my mind to start getting well. The next 6 months were full of hard work. I fought dependency to prescription drugs. I started using medical cannabis. It was a game changer. I was going to therapy on a regular basis, exercising and was eating and sleeping better.  I was re-energized and started 2 businesses. I also began helping other veterans with PTSD.  Trauma Healing Centers heard what I was doing. They wanted to help and hire veterans like myself. We started building.  Opened our doors in Jan 2015. We now have 4 clinics open and are poised to open many more this year. We have 1800 clients. and the phones is busy daily.
