Air Circulation

Air-Sea Interface The atmosphere and the ocean act as one independent system. Solar energy causes winds. Atmospheric winds create most currents and waves.

Air Circulation Global circulation of air is impacted by: Uneven solar heating of the Earth Rotation of the Earth

Air Circulation Warm air: Less dense. Will rise. Cool air: More dense. Exerts more pressure.

Air Circulation Air flows from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure. Cool air puts pressure on warm air. Warm air rises. Cool air takes its place. Then temperatures change. Bill Nye

Air Circulation The shape of the Earth (sphere) causes different locations to have different temperatures. The changing temperatures of the air along different locations of Earth, creates 3 closed patterns of air movement in each Hemisphere.

Air Circulation Earth rotates on its axis. The atmosphere moves with the Earth. When air moves north or south because of convection, it still moves east or west because of rotation.

Coriolis Effect Air will be deflected to the: Right in the Northern Hemisphere. Left in the Southern Hemisphere. The Coriolis Effect Pathway of Airplane

Wind Patterns Trade Winds Westerlies Polar Easterlies Most of Canada’s winds are the Prevailing Westerlies, moving from west to east.

Jet Streams Ribbons of extremely fast moving air. Found at boundaries of polar and temperate zones and temperate and tropical zones.
