WOODRUFF ARTS CENTER EDUCATORS’ CONFERENCE 2016 DREW BROWN AND WENDY ARACICH SWEET APPLE ELEMENTARY AND GA CONNECTIONS ACADEMY

OVERVIEW OF STEAM UNIT AT SWEET APPLE ELEM Day 1: Intro in the Art Room: View BrainPop on 3D printing, learn about Iris van Herpen AND sketch in your learning log. Your 1 st sketch is created with 2D shapes. The 2 nd sketch should be in 2 point perspective (think FORM!). Days 2/3: Learn TinkerCad in the computer room with guest teacher Mrs. Wendy Aracich, Mrs. Whelan and Mrs. Watson. You will receive the log in info, so you can also work at home. Day 4: Back to the Art Room for 3D printing and follow up with a reflection in your learning log! NEXT: Building sculpture based on your CAD (computer aided-design)!

How would you describe Iris Van Herpen’s work? What do you see? How does she use the elements of design? Where might you find these outfits? How does she create this work? What is she trying to convey? Do you like the outfits? Why or why not?

IRIS VAN HERPEN Showcasing work from 2008 through 2015, the exhibition at the High Museum featured forty-five outfits highlighting fifteen fashion collections designed by cutting-edge designer Iris van Herpen. Her work includes some of the first 3-D-printed fashion ever created. Garments in the exhibition use innovative materials and technology. It is wearable sculpture! Van Herpen has collaborated with architects, engineers, shoemakers, and handcrafters to bring her visions to the runway and our galleries. What do you think of her fusion of skilled handwork and current-day technology? Take your parents and go see the show!!!

ART AND 3D PRINTING Van Herpen’s design work—especially the integration of 3-D printing—is groundbreaking innovation. She is inspired by science and nature, and her collaborative process inspires new and unique approaches to fashion. More information about Iris van Herpen’s current collections and her collaborators is available on her website: irisvanherpen.com. http://www.irisvanherpen.com/video

3D PRINTING GEOMETRY ROBOTS: WHY ROBOTS? THIS IS A GREAT WAY TO LEARN TINKERCAD! YOUR ROBOT MAY NOT ACTUALLY MOVE. YOU ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH COMBINING FORMS. BE IMAGINATIVE! YOU CAN TURN YOUR ROBOT INTO WEARABLE ART BY ADDING JEWELRY FINDINGS (LOOPS AND RINGS).

WE CAN CREATE 3D DESIGNS AND SCULPTURES UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY THROUGH TINKERCAD. WE CAN USE MATH CONCEPTS BY COMBINING 3D FORMS.

I CAN CREATE A 3D ROBOT WITH RECYCLABLES SUCH AS WOOD SCRAPS, FOUND OBJECTS (SHOP ITEMS/OLD JEWELRY)! Be inspired by your sketch and your work on TinkerCad! Revise and edit your design where needed. Bring objects and items from home to incorporate (bottle caps, nuts and bolts, etc.) Consider making your robot symbolic of something you like or like to do! PRE-LESSON/WARM UP: Work together as a group to make a CREATIVE robot on your table. This is temporary design, then next week you will start creating individually!
