MONT BLANC I have chosen to talk about Mont Blanc because it is the highest mountain in the Alpes in France and I have been skiing there before, although I haven’t skied down this certain Mountain, but my Dad has.

HISTORY ABOUT THE MOUNTAIN. Around 200 people climb to the summit of the mountain every year, but the first recorded ascent was in August 1786 by Jacque Balmat and Michel Paccard. The first woman to climb the mountain was In 1808. Two passenger air craft have crashed on the mountain one was in 1950 and the other was in 1966 killing over 160 people.

APPEARANCE Mont Blanc is French for white mountain, as it says in the name it is a mountain that is covered in snow. It stands at 15,781 feet high.

SPORTS ON THE MOUNTAIN Although the entire area is well known for its winter sports and Mountaineering, summer is also a popular time to visit. Also it offers great opportunities for hiking and cycling.

CLIMATE AND ENVIRONMENT ON THE MOUNTAIN. The months May to September have a nice average temperature. On average, the warmest month is July. And the coolest month is January. August is the wettest month, and April is the driest month. - 43 degrees was the coldest temperature ever recorded on Mont Blanc. As the summit is made up of snow and ice it rarely rises above 0 degrees.

WILDLIFE The alpine ibex looks a bit like a large goat, with the male boasting rather elegant curved horns which have ridged lines on the front. Conservation agencies have worked hard to protect wild animals on Mont Blanc, so give them their space and let them stay wild in their natural habitat. Which is generally at altitudes over 2000 metres and on rocky terrain.

WILDLIFE:2 Marmot Living underground, these chipmunk-like critters are easily recognizable by their ‘standing’ position, as they keep upright while on guard looking out for potential predators. When we went skiing we saw some and my mum adored them.

HOW THE ALPES WERE FORMED The Alpes are fold mountains. The general theory is that as two plates, with land masses on them, move towards each other they push layers of accumulated sediment in the sea between them up into folds. Thus most fold mountains will continue to grow, as the plates constantly move towards each other.

QUIZ TIME! 1: how many aircraft have crashed on the mountain? 2: what is the driest month? 3:what kind of mountain range are the Alpes?
