1 English 9H Ms. Bugasch September 13, 2013 “F” Day Goals 1. Hand in Feed 2. Review the characteristics of the literary element plot 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the plot structure by applying the term in familiar contexts 4. Use plot diagram to present analysis of plot structure

2 FFW O Take out Feed books O In your notebook, write down the name of one of your favorite movies or books. O Then, brainstorm the big significant events from that movie or book. O Discuss

4 Review Structure of Plot O Plot – the sequence of events in a story. The plot includes: - Exposition - The part of the plot that tells how the story begins. Section that introduces characters, the setting, and conflicts. In between the exposition and rising action, an inciting incident occurs. The inciting incident causes the conflict and causes action to rise. O Rising Action - The action in the story leading up to the climax. Consists of a series of complications. O These occur when the main characters take action to resolve their problems and are met with further problems: O Fear O Hostility O Threatening situation - Conflict - Struggles or problems between opposing forces.

5 More PLOT -C-Climax - The point of crisis in the plot. It may be the reader ’ s point of highest interest. The turning point in the story. -F-Falling action - The action in the story after the climax is revealed. A ll events following the climax or turning point in the story. These events are a result of the action taken at the climax. -R-Resolution - The part of the plot that reveals the final outcome. T he end of the central conflict: it shows how the situation turns out and ties up loose ends

7 Class and Group Activity O Get into groups of 3 O Take the brainstormed events from FFW and identify them as parts of the plot diagram O Construct a plot diagram using those events O Discuss and share plot diagrams

8 Closure O Miss B-Ball O Come up with questions to ask your classmates. Throw the ball to the person who answers your question. That person must then come up with their own question to ask.

9 Homework 1. Watch a television show tonight. Fill in the plot diagram according to that show.
