The Präteritum To form the Präteritum of weak verbs, add -te, -test, -ten, or -tet to the infinitive stem. Add an -e before these endings if the stem ends in -d, -t, or a consonant cluster. Die Kinder spielten in ihren Zimmern. The children played in their rooms. Ich mietete eine kleine Wohnung. I rented a small apartment.

If the modal stem has an Umlaut, the Umlaut is dropped. Warum wolltet ihr einen neuen Teppich kaufen? Why did you want to buy a new rug? Bianca musste ihre Großeltern besuchen. Bianca had to visit her grandparents.

Be careful not to confuse the Präteritum form mochte with the polite form möchte. Anna möchte eine neue Lampe fu ̈ r ihr Schlafzimmer. Anna would like a new lamp for her bedroom. Als Junge mochte Peter das Zimmer auf dem Dachboden. As a boy, Peter liked the room in the attic.

Wir brachten die Tischlampe ins Arbeitszimmer. We brought the desk lamp into the office. Wusste Daniel Emmas Adresse? Did Daniel know Emma’s address?

Ich aß ein kleines Stu ̈ ck Kuchen. I ate a little piece of cake. Er sah mir in die Augen. He looked me in the eyes. Sie fuhren nach Frankfurt. They drove to Frankfurt.

Es wurde schnell dunkel. It got dark quickly. Als Kinder hatten wir viele Haustiere. We had a lot of pets when we were kids.
