Effective Employer/Employee relations The London Underground and RMT Union (The Rail Maritime and Transport union) By Imi, Kate, Mo

What was the reason for the industrial dispute? An employee was sacked, so the company has decided to strike. The union said the action was over a failure to agree to re-hire driver Arwyn Thomas, who is awaiting the results of an employment tribunal. Mr Thomas is claiming unfair dismissal, he had been sacked on disciplinary charges following "unproven" allegations – alleged abusive behaviour.

How was it handled by employers/employees? The London Underground met the RMT at ACAS to try and resolve the dispute about Mr Thomas’s unfair dismissal. The London Underground refused to discuss re-employing Arwyn Thomas. Howard Collins, London Underground's chief operating officer, said: "The RMT leadership should call off its threatened strike action,

Was any industrial action threatened or carried out? 29% of the RMT tube drivers threatened to strike

What were the effects of the threat or action? They have striked on the 19 th of June, and are planning on striking on the 27 th of June, the 29 th of June and the 1 st of July.

How successful were the employees? The extent to which the employees are successful could be argued. The London Underground have stated that they will not be re-hiring Mr Thomas, yet the strikes are still going ahead. As they have not all been carried out yet we do not know how successful it is yet. Secondly, only 29% of the tube drivers who belong to the RMT union will be striking on the four planned days. This means that it is unlikely to make much of an impact. London Underground stated that their service will be “near normal” if the strikes go ahead.

What is ACAS? Was it involved in the example you have researched? Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service. They aim to improve organisations and working life through better employment relations. Their belief is preventing a issue is better than curing that issue. They offer a range of services to help deal with any problems in the workplace. Their advice can be accessed via their website or telephone services. Services they offer include advice, business solutions, training, services for small business, international services, the ACAS scheme, medication and conciliation. Both the London Underground and RMT union met at ACAS to try and resolve their problems. But the talks broke down, and the strikes are going ahead.
