3 REGISTRATION Who Registers with Accessible Learning Services (ALS)? Students who have or suspect they have a: Physical or medical disability Mental health condition Learning disability Acquired brain injury Or who are: Deaf, deafened or hard of hearing Blind or low vision

4 DOCUMENTATION ALS requires documentation of disability to provide appropriate accommodations and services. If you suspect you have a Learning Disability, please contact Accessible Learning Services to obtain a Delta Screener. Parents and caregivers may wish to look into insurance benefits to determine what portion of an assessment can be covered. If you suspect you have a disability other than a Learning Disability, please consult with your primary physician and complete the Accessible Learning Services Medical Documentation Form.

5 CONFIDENTIALITY AND CONSENT The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) guides Mohawk College’s confidentiality and consent policies. College staff are prohibited from releasing any information about a student to anyone other than the student. FIPPA and ALS The students attending Mohawk College are considered independent adults making ALS a confidential service. All student documentation is held in a confidential, electronic file. FIPPA is provincial legislation that determines how post-secondary institutions gather and use student information.

6 CONFIDENTIALITY AND CONSENT Students registering with ALS will have the opportunity to provide both internal and external consent. Internal Consent Allows ALS staff to advocate on a student’s behalf. This consent is located on the Confidential Intake form. External Consent Allows ALS staff to communicate with individuals outside of the college to support the student’s academic progress. This consent is a separate document that can be completed as needed. There are limitations and procedures that will be followed to ensure student privacy and confidentiality.

7 CONFIDENTIALITY AND CONSENT For parents and caregivers As per FIPPA, ALS staff do not discuss private or confidential information with parents or caregivers, unless the student has given written consent and discussion with a parent or caregiver is required by the student or ALS staff. Please know that if you call or email ALS staff with a concern, we are working diligently to connect with your student and provide support where needed. ALS has a parent/caregiver guide that outlines our services and roles. You can obtain this guide from our website, or by speaking to the presenter.

8 APPOINTMENTS Booking Appointments To book or cancel an appointment: Call 905-575-2211 Email accessiblelearningservices@ mohawkcollege.ca Visit Accessible Learning Services department located at each campus. Drop-In Appointments All Accessibility Counsellors and Advisors have daily “drop- in” times. Short appointments (up to 15 minutes). On a first come, first served basis and are not pre-booked.

9 ACCESSIBLE LEARNING SERVICES SUPPORT OFFERED: Collaborates with students to develop an accommodation plan. Assists with educational planning. Offers guidance on financial issues specific to students with disabilities. Supports transition to the workplace or other postsecondary and community programs.

10 ACCESSIBLE LEARNING SERVICES SUPPORT OFFERED Teaches students how disability impacts learning in a post- secondary environment. Uses educational expertise to develop strategies that maximize strength to compensate for areas of challenge. Assesses for adaptive technology, teaches students how to use and apply coursework, and makes recommendations for accommodations and purchase.

11 ROLES Student Provides appropriate disability documentation in a timely manner. Follows procedures for requesting and accessing accommodations. Distributes CAAP and discuss accommodations as needed. Updates Accessibility Counsellor/ Advisor if accommodations are not being met, or their needs have changed. Is a partner with the Accessibility Counsellor/Advisor. Students must self- identify to ALS.

12 ROLES Parent or Caregiver Understands the new context of post-secondary education and encourages the student to connect with campus services. Promotes independent decision making as the student develops educational goals and personal expectations. Assists in life skills planning such as housing, transportation, budgeting, etc. Provides external support as the student navigates through the transition to post-secondary education.

13 ACCOMMODATIONS Confidential Academic Accommodation Plan (CAAP) Students and Accessibility Counsellor or Advisor work together to develop this document outlining accommodations needed. Communication tool with professors Students must email document to faculty each semester. CAAP must be renewed every two semesters. CAAP can be revised at any time.

15 ATTENDANT CARE Mohawk College does not assume responsibility for the coordination of Attendant Care Services. If needed, Mohawk College can help with the application process and connect students with March of Dimes Canada. Students are responsible for ensuring they register with a local service provider and that all services are in place prior to attending classes. 16 FINANCIAL INFORMATION Tuition Fee Policy Available to students with a permanent disability and documentation supporting a reduced course load. Students may be eligible for a reduced fee after full program fees have been paid. Does not cover failed courses or courses where a student has withdrawn more than 10 days after the start of classes. Form is completed by the students Accessibility Counsellor or Advisor. Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) Non-repayable bursary that may allow students to access funding for disability related expenses. Student needs to be OSAP eligible. Funding is authorized by the student’s Accessibility Counsellor/Advisor.

17 FINANCIAL INFORMATION Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities Grant offers up to $2000 per academic year for students with permanent disabilities who are OSAP eligible. Designed to off-set student loan amount. Part-Time Canada Student Loan May offer up to $10,000 over the course of a student’s study term. Students receiving a part time student loan may also be eligible for the Canada Student Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities. ALS recommends that all students apply for the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP).

18 FINANCIAL INFORMATION Institutionally Funded Special Bursary (IFSB) May fund up to 2 courses per semester up to 75% and up to 100% of book expenses for part-time students. Students with disabilities may also qualify for an additional $2000 of the Bursary for Student with Disabilities. Must be able to demonstrate financial need. Support for Apprentices with Disabilities (SAWD) Covers a wide range of services such as tutoring, additional documentation, and disability-specific equipment. Available to Pre-Apprenticeship, Apprenticeship and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) students.

20 FIVE THINGS TO REMEMBER Register with Accessible Learning Services early so that accommodations can be developed and arranged prior to classes. Students must email CAAPs to professors in order to receive accommodations. CAAPs must be renewed every 2 semesters.Students register for test/exam accommodations online. Students must register for testing accommodations at least 7 days prior to the test/exam date.

21 NEXT STEPS If you have your documentation and intake form complete Go to Station 1/Triage Officer to book initial appointment with Accessibility Counsellor/Advisor. Accessibility Support Officer will email interim accommodations for tests and exams (extra time and clarification) if an appointment has been made with Accessibility Counsellor/Advisor. Interim CAAP will not be created without initial appointment booked. Interim CAAP will expire at end of semester. If you do not have your documentation Complete a Confidential Intake Form. Obtain disability documentation from a Registered Healthcare Professional. Contact ALS to book an appointment with a Accessibility Counsellor/Advisor.
