The Intolerable Acts 1774 Definition: A series of laws sponsored by the British Prime minister Lord North and enacted in 1774, In response to the Boston Tea Party.

Did the British parliament achieve what they wanted to achieve with the Intolerable Acts?

The Four Acts ➢ BOSTON PORT ACT- Closed the port of Boston until price of duped tea was paid. ➢ MASSACHUSETTS GOVERNMENT ACT- Banned all town meetings that didn't have approval of the royal governor. ➢ ADMINISTRATION OF JUSTICE ACT- Allowed for the transfer to England of legal suits against crown officials. ➢ QUARTERING ACT- Authorised troop billeting in homes, Taverns and unoccupied buildings. ➢ QUEBEC ACT- Allowed for the extension of the Canada boundary, granted civil government and religious freedom to Catholics living in Quebec.

An act to discontinue, in such manner, and for such time as are therein mentioned, the landing and discharging, lading or shipping, of goods, wares, and merchandise, at the town, and within the harbour, of Boston, in the province of Massachusetts Bay, in North America. Source: Great Britain The statutes at large... [from 1225 to 1867] by Danby Pickering Cambridge : Printed by Benthem, for C. Bathhurst ; London, 1762-1869 The Boston Port Bill

➢ The first regulating act implemented by the British parliament, meant to stop the rebellion of the Colonies ➢ Came about because of the Boston Tea Party ➢ Issued March 31, 1774 ➢ Prohibited loading and unloading of ships in Boston Harbour until East India Company was paid for the destroyed tea ➢ Threatened life of the city, for preventing Boston access to the sea meant economic disaster

Massachusetts Government Act & The Administration of Justice Act Processed pretty much simultaneously Both processed on May 20, 1774 Government Act made provincial council appointive, rather than elective, as it was in most other colonies. Gave the Governor sole power to dismiss inferior judges, sheriffs and officers of law; power to control and restrict activities of town meetings Administration of Justice Act tried to protect crown officials by allowing for transfer to England of legal suits against crown officials

If it shall happen at any time that any officers or soldiers in His Majesty's service shall remain within any of the said colonies without quarters...it shall and may be lawful for the governor of the province to order and direct such and so many uninhabited houses, outhouses, barns, or other buildings as he shall think necessary to be taken...and to put and quarter such officers and soldiers therein for such time as he shall think proper. 8 Signed by the king on June 2, 1774 Empowered the Governor Thomas Gage to quarter troops wherever he felt fit. Could Quarter them in private dwellings, in taverns and in unoccupied buildings. Extends its application to all the colonies of America at the time.

The Quebec Act Processed May 30, 1774 Attempt by the British parliament to secure the and settle the future of the French-speaking people of Canada Extended Boundaries of Quebec into Ohio and Illinois regions Gave catholic's of Canada more religious freedom

Reasons For the Establishment of Acts Extreme measures taken by parliament to have “Some act of Power” Edmund Burke.

Reasons For the Establishment of Acts “Britain's best interest would have been to review the series of increasingly negative results in the colonies with the aim of re-directing the alarming course of events.” Barbara W. Tuchman, 1985 “[that] While preparing the bill the cabinet [had learnt] nothing from the ten years of angry protests since Grenville's first tax, [and] expected as always, no trouble.” Barbara W. Tuchman, 1985

Reasons For the Establishment of Acts “The basic question of every revolution is the question of the power in the state” Vladimir Lenin, Russian Marxist revolutionary (1870-1924)

Conclusion British parliament felt that these laws were the best way to handle the colonists Believed that they would give them control once and for all over the colonists. “The Americans have tarred and feathered your subjects, plundered your merchants, burnt your ships, denied all obedience to your laws and authority; yet so clement and so long forbearing has our conduct been that it is incumbent on us now to take a different course. Whatever may be the consequences, we must risk something; if we do not, all is over” Lord North, April 22 1774 Didn't achieve control because the colonists also wanted power so were willing and ready to fight for it and not be subdued
