2 London is the capital city of England and of the United Kingdom situated on the Thames river, the largest city in Britain and one of the largest cities in the world.

3 History London began on two small patches of dry land in the middle of a march on the north bank of the Thames. That was before the Romans came. In Roman times it was named Londinium, and was already a centre of trade. Today London covers a vast area, with millions of inhabitants.

4 City of London There is the City of London. It is an area of one square mile running along the Thames Embankment from about Waterloo Bridge to Tower Bridge. It is the financial and business centre of Great Britain. About half a million people work there during the day. At night it is almost deserted.

5 The Country Of London Then there is the Country of London. It is composed of about thirty borough in addition to the City.

6 Greater London There is Greater London which includes inner London and the suburbs. It forms a kind of circle with a radius from fifteen to twenty miles.

7 London has many different faces.
The existence of London depended on its water-born trade which still makes London one of the world’s largest ports. Historical and geographical circumstances have turned London into one of the world’s most important commercial and cultural centre. London has many different faces. There is the West End, a fashionable shopping and entertainment centre, where, mostly, well-to-do people live. There is Mayfair stretching from the West End along Park Lane to Marble Arch.

8 There are Houses of Parliament built on the banks of the Thames at Westminster. Common people reside in the East End. This is a vast area running eastward from the City.

9 London Shows examples of building that express all the different areas of its history. Buckingham Palace – is the official London residence of the Sovereign. Whitehall – is a street in central London running from Trafalgar Square to the Houses of Parliament and contains many important buildings and government offices.

10 One of the prominent buildings of City of London is St
One of the prominent buildings of City of London is St. Paul's Cathedral. The building rises up to 111m. By the base of dome there is situated “Gallery of Whisper”, famous by its acoustic effect. A word, saying very quietly on one side, is clear hear in another wall.

11 Near the east gates of City it is found the Tower of London
Near the east gates of City it is found the Tower of London. With Tower connected the ceremony of “transferring of keys”. Guards of Tower clad in suits of Tudors times. There is another tradition. Ravens have always lived in the Tower. There is popular belief that if ravens left the fortress, Britain empire will fall.

12 That is about Westminster Abbey, it have saved its appearance to our times. Abbey usually blind people by precious painting of colorful glass, open-work stone details. Exactly there is found famous “Cozy Corner of Poets”. In 1837 on a coast of Thames it has began construction of Westminster Palace.

13 Clock tower Big Ben has 98m of its high
Clock tower Big Ben has 98m of its high. It has hour mechanism, diversified by very high accuracy. This is the main clock of state. Its striking is transmitting by English radio stations. It has named by the name of Benjamin Hall, one of the leaders of construction, which was named Big Ben by his high growing.
