CW 21st.January 2010 The Treaty of Versailles Negotiation Game
Walt – find out how easy or difficult it was for The Big Three to negotiate a peace deal at the end of WW1 and to introduce the issues decided at Versailles Wilf – an understanding of the aims of The Big Three in relation to the issues that had to be resolved.
6
What's New? You have already seen that the Big Three wanted different things from the treaty. You have also seen that there were differences between what the Big Three believed was best and what their people at home expected of them. This made agreement at Versailles difficult – but a deal had to be reached!

Activity Today you are going to act as negotiators at Versailles.
Of course, you all want peace to be agreed, but you all want to get the best deal for your country as well. You may not be able to get exactly what you wanted. This activity will show which of you are the best negotiators!

You will be split into three country groups (France, Britain & USA)
You will be split into three country groups (France, Britain & USA). The activity will take place over three stages: Stage 1 – Deciding your demands In your groups, you will study the issues and agree what YOU want from the peace treaty. Stage 2 – Negotiating with other countries Representatives groups will negotiate with the other countries individually to try and reach agreements. Stage 3 – the conference The whole class will negotiate on each issue. You MUST reach a unanimous decision on each point!

Stage 1 - Deciding Your Demands
In your country groups, study the issues to be decided. The briefing sheet outlines your position. Look at the points available for each issue carefully. Remember, your agreement with the other countries MUST be reached, so you must try to make a decision on each issue which will be acceptable to the other countries. For example, you might have to accept losing points on some issues, but try to make them back on others. You have 5 minutes to reach a decision.
10
Stage 2 - Negotiating with other countries
It is now time for private, behind the scenes negotiations with one other country. See if you can come to an agreement on some of the points. Each group should choose two people to go and negotiate with another group. You will have ten minutes to do this.
11
Stage 3 - the Conference It is now time for the Paris Peace Conference to start. Firstly, you need to elect a member of the class to chair the debate. This person will control the discussions, and invite people to speak. The chairperson will then go through the issues point by point. Unanimous agreement MUST be reached on each point before the end of the lesson. You may need to leave certain points and go back to them. I will act as Secretary and record each decision. At the end, the team with the most points from your final agreement will win as the best negotiators!
