5 Grade 8 Science Course Outline Unit 1: Water Systems (30%) Approximate dates: September – (mid)November Unit 2: Optics (30%) Approximate dates: (mid)November – February Unit 3: Fluids (20%) Approximate dates: February – April Unit 4: Cells, Tissues, Organs and Systems (20%) Approximate dates: April – June

6 Each unit consists of three chapters. After the first and second chapter of each unit students will be given a short (10 multiple choice) chapter checkup. After the completion of the third chapter students will write a unit test. These checkups and unit tests will account for 40% of the student's mark. Within each unit students will complete two laboratory activities, a scientific literacy case study, and various small assignments. Within some units students will also complete a small in-class project. These performance assessment items will account for 50% of the student's mark. The June final exam for science is a Scientific Literacy Assessment (SLA) that will complete the final 10% of the student's overall mark. There will be no direct content from the four units completed during the year on this exam so students do not need to study the units again. Students will need to know how to graph, how to read and interpret graphs, how to analyze an experiment (identifying manipulated, responding, and controlled variables, assessing hypothesis, results, and conclusions). Students will also be required to analyze a scientific document. We will be doing all of the above in science class throughout the year so students should be well prepared for this exam. Copies of previous exams will be used for review at the end of the year.
