Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 6: Ways of Knowing to Support Relational Inquiry [Slide 1] READ the chapter, and STUDY: Box 6.2 (p. 257), Box 6.3 (p. 263), Box 6.4 (p. 270), Box 6.5 (p. 271), Box 6.3 (p. 277) “A relational epistemology highlights the inseparability of mind and body and thus of people and their worlds” (p. 231). “Nursing practice that is relational and responsive to the uniqueness of people and families must be informed by multiple forms of knowledge including empirical, ethical, aesthetic, and sociopolitical” (p. 231).

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 6: Ways of Knowing to Support Relational Inquiry [Slide 2] “Relating through knowing and not knowing simultaneously in all instances assists you to continually question the limits of your knowledge and continuously inquire to expand that knowledge” (p. 239). “Knowledge can never be separated from values or ideology” (p. 260).

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 6: Ways of Knowing to Support Relational Inquiry [Slide 3] APPLICATION: How can Doane and Varcoe’s critique of compliance (pp. 274-275) be informed by multiple forms of knowledge? Discuss each form of knowledge and offer some specific examples.

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 7: All Nursing is Theoretically Informed [Slide 1] READ the chapter, and STUDY the questions on p. 298. “Although the theories that inform your action may not be formal or intentionally enlisted, they highly influence your actions and set parameters on how you provide nursing care” (p. 283).

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 7: All Nursing is Theoretically Informed [Slide 2] APPLICATION: In their review of theories informing nursing practice, Doane and Varcoe articulate the characteristics of humanistic nursing, including “being with and doing with”, “dialogue”, “here and now”, “occurring in situations”, “all-at-once”, and “complementary synthesis” (p. 287). DISCUSS how these characteristics might inform a public health nurse visiting a new mother who is having trouble with breast feeding.

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 8: All Nursing is Relational Practice [Slide 1] READ the chapter, and STUDY Box 8.1 (p. 314), “Try it Out” 8.2 (p. 315), “Relating to What Is” (pp. 327- 330), and “Your Relational Inquiry Toolbox” (pp. 331- 332). “To practice from a socio-environmental perspective of health in line with the purposes and goals of nursing as outlined in the human science theories of nursing requires shifting your reference point to what is—relating to the particular situation as it is and responding to what is meaningful to the people in those situations” (Hartrick Doane in press; cited in Doane & Varcoe 2015, p. 324).

Some Key Points: Doane and Varcoe Chapter 8: All Nursing is Relational Practice[Slide 2 ] APPLICATION: TRY OUT Exercize 8.1 (p. 313): Reflecting back on a clinical experience, ask: What patterns do you see? Can you identify values that are shaping your practice? How? Are your actions in line with your values? What knowledge informs your relational practice? How?
