2 DIET Their diets consists of large mammals, such as deer and elk. They also sometimes eat smaller animals, such as beavers, porcupines, or even mice. Cougars can kill about a deer a day.

3 WEIGHT North American Cougars can weigh up to 150 pounds. At six months, the cubs weigh 30 to 40 pounds. Cougars can kill prey up to seven times their weight.

4 AGILITY Cougars can jump to 20 feet in a standing position. A Cougar can jump 16 feet vertically. The Cougar can run up to 43 miles per hour.

5 COUGAR POPULATION The Cougar species as a whole has made a dramatic recovery. Only 30 to 50 Florida panthers remain in the wild today. Adult cougars have no natural enemies.

6 LENGTH North American cougars can grow up to eight feet long. Next to the jaguar, it is the largest North American cat. An average female is five feet long.

7 MATING Females mate every two or three years. Females produce a litter of two or three cubs.

8 OTHER FACTS Cougars are considered big game in many of the western states. A young male may leave at one year of age.
