Five Methods for Resolving Conflict

Denial Person tries to solve problem by ignoring or denying its existence. Appropriate to use when issue is not very important, when emotions are strong, or when timing is wrong. Inappropriate to use when issue is important or when issue will not go away but keeps on building.

Suppression or Smoothing Over Differences are played down; surface harmony exists. May result in resentment or defensiveness. Appropriate to use when issue is not very important or timing is wrong or when preservation of relationship is important. Inappropriate to use when issue is important and the problem keeps on building.

Power or Dominance Authority, position, majority rule, or a persuasive minority settles the conflict. Appropriate to use when power comes with position of authority (boss or parent) or when issue requires a fast solution. Inappropriate to use when losers have no way to express needs. Could result in future problems.

Negotiation or Compromise Each party gives up something in order to meet halfway. Appropriate to use when both parties are committed to the process and want to make it work, and when both parties think a compromise can be reached. Inappropriate to use when parties don’t want to negotiate and are not committed.

Collaboration Abilities, values, and expertise of all are recognized; but emphasis is on group solution. Results in win/win situation. Appropriate to use when time is available to complete the consensus process, and when people want to work with others effectively. Inappropriate to use when parties are not committed or trained in the process or when time to work through the process isn’t available.
