2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Strategy for the research program in Phase 2 (2012-2015)

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Importance of energy related research Energy research a prerequisite to sustainable power generation in the future educate new MSc and PhD at Swedish universities in the energy field build and keep strong research nodes in the energy field recruit qualified personnel to manufacturing industries keep manufacturing industries in Sweden keep competence at utilities

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Thermal turbomachines Biofuels (- CO 2 Capture) –Steam turbines/ gas turbines/compressors Nuclear power plants –Steam turbines Solar thermal power –Steam turbines / gas turbines Hydrogen society –Steam turbines/ gas turbines Fossil fired power plants - CO 2 Capture –IGCC –Oxyfuel –Membrane technology –CLC - Fuel flexibility - Lower emissions - Integrated plants - More efficient turbomachinery - More efficient operation - Lower O&M cost STs/ GTs/ Compressors Future needs of thermal turbomachines used for electricity, fuel or for transports sectors

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Objective Phase 2 Objective of TURBO POWER -TURBO POWER will contribute to a sustainable and efficient global energy system in medium term and long term view by -Reaching higher energy usage (efficiency improvements) -Lower emissions -Better operation economy -Fuel flexibility, in particular regarding renewable fuels -This will be accomplished by building technology and competence for industry and universities within the field thermal turbomachines and processes. The program will strengthen relevant research groups at universities that are internationally recognized and also enhance the cooperation between industry and universities. -The results will be used and commercialised to strengthen the global competitiveness of the Swedish industry.

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Financing partners Swedish Energy Agency Conversion to a sustainable energy society Sustainable fuel Higher efficiency Volvo Aero Development and manufacturing of aero engines Development and product support for Swedish military jet engines Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery Development and manufacturing of steam turbines and gasturbines Complete power plants for production of electricity, steam and heat New partners Utilities – business through power production Other turbomachine developers Academia Examination Publications Research quality International positioning Underlying technologies, competence areas and partial results are of common interest among partners.

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Research focus – Phase 2 -Thermal turbomachines are common in energy conversion processes -Research focus for TURBO POWER Phase 2 will therefore be on applied research on: –Energy systems: Processes and cycle studies on energy conversion systems involving thermal turbomachines –Thermal turbomachinery on gasturbine and steam turbine operation level such as condition monitoring, maintenance and optimisation –Turbomachinery components concepts –Methods and phenomena, in order to understand (aeroelasticity/aerodynamics, life prediction, applied combustion, heat transfer /cooling of hot components) -BUT also creating pre-studies / background information for possible pilot/ demonstration projects involving thermal turbomachines

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future TRLPurposeWhat to be done in this phase 9Verification of Product use Product used successfully 8Product developmentProduct fully developed and qualified for usage (through testign and demonstration) 7Product developmentPrototype engine in real environment 6Technical verification, demonstration Prototype on component level demonstrated in relevant environment 5Technical verification, demonstration Simplified prototype on component level validated in laboratory environment, all functionalities 4Applied ResearchSimplified prototype on component level validated in laboratory environment, only one functionality 3Applied ResearchCritical function/characteristic in concept/application shown in analysis or experimentally 2Applied ResearchTechnical concept / application formulated 1Fundamental ResearchFundamental principal observed and formulated Technology Readiness Level - TRL TURBO POWER focus TRL2 - 6

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Applied Research Fundamental Research TURBO POWER Thermal Turbo Machines and Processes Phase 2 Fluid dynamics and Heat transfer Possible Energy related Research Programmes 2012 - 2016 Demonstration Solar Integrated plant Combustion Materials and Mechanical integrity GENERICAPPLIED Systems / Operation Components Functions Methods Biofuel DEMONSTRATION Pilot scale test Demonstration of components / systems Utilities Key competencies Technology gaps identified Oxyfuel

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future 15% - Operation / power processes / cycles / concepts 75% - Division between areas as in Phase 1 Funding contribution to reach objective Interest from OEM’s, academia and some utilites Methods ApplicationComponent / Module Engine Energy system 10% - Contributions to running pilot- and demonstrator projects and prestudies for future demonstrator projects Main interest for OEM’s and academia Interest from utilities

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Levers to reach objective (1) Strong interest from all funding partners –Vital for successful execution –From method to application –Currently many common interests on generic method / phenomena level Applied research –Focus on areas where results giving a technology advantage can be seen compared to competitive technologies –TURBO POWER programme will include pre-studies, background information and will give recommendation for demonstrators / pilot plants –Allow up to 25% of funding, if possible, for demonstrator / pilot concept analysis –Funding of demonstrators is outside the scope of the TURBO POWER programme

2011-04-14Sustainable Power for the Future Levers to reach objective (2) Innovation strategy to commercialise knowledge –Testing possibilities inside and outside TURBO POWER –Development of competent persons Internationally competitive research –Continuity and endurance in efforts (10-15 years to go from method to pilot) –Focus on strong nodes, not on individuals –Critical size of node to maintain competitive edge –Focus on results, not Ph.D. projects –Need a good balance with overlap and continuity –Attract international funding to the areas where TURBO POWER are present
